ABOUT THE POSITION

The City of Dana Point's Facilities Division is looking for a Team Player to perform a variety of semi-skilled maintenance and repair work in the upkeep of the City's various facilities and buildings.


This is a Continuous Recruitment that is subject to close once a sufficient number of qualified applications is received. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS:
This is the entry level class in the Maintenance Worker series.
Initially under close supervision, incumbents with basic maintenance experience learn City infrastructure, systems, and facilities, use of tools and equipment, and a wide variety of practices and procedures.
As experience is gained, assignments become more varied and are performed with greater independence.
Positions at this level usually perform most of the duties required of the positions at the II level but are not expected to function at the same skill level and usually exercise less independent discretion and judgment in matters related to work procedures and methods.


This is a Non-Exempt position under FLSA standards.
EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES Performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance, repair, and construction tasks in both shop and field environments in the alteration, repair, and maintenance of parks, equipment, buildings, and structures.

Remove and install signs; remove non-hazardous spills and debris; service trash bins, pressure wash sidewalks.

Troubleshoot maintenance problems involving electrical, structural, plumbing and equipment repair or replacement.

Perform regular park inspections for preventative maintenance.

Provides assistance with set-up and removal of equipment and facilities at special events
Maintain and repair tools and equipment used in parks and facilities maintenance.

Lift, carry, and wheel heavy materials and/or objects.

Perform and observe safe work methods, policies and procedures and make appropriate use of related safety equipment as required.

Use proper protective equipment in the course of the job, including steel-toed boots, eye protection, hearing protection and gloves.

Drive City vehicles between various work sites; maintain vehicles, storage sites, and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition and ensure equipment is secure at the close of the workday.

Utilize a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS) to create and update work orders and analyze maintenance data effectively.

Read, understand, and interpret written instructions, plans, blueprints, specifications, and schematics.

Respond to emergency calls for service on a call-out basis, working outside normal working hours if necessary.

Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF: Methods and techniques of general maintenance repair, and construction related to the area of work assigned.

Operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned.
Safety procedures and practices for maintenance and repair activities.

Basic concepts of the skilled trade areas, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and ventilation.

Basic concepts, methods, and techniques pertaining to the construction, maintenance, and repair of a wide variety of indoor and outdoor facilities.

Basic concepts of landscaping, field maintenance, arboriculture, irrigation inspection and repair.

Safe driving principles and practices.
ABILITY TO: Understand and communicate effectively.
Follow oral and written instructions.

Perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual tasks requiring coordination and physical strength.

Perform painting, plumbing, and electrical repairs.

Safely lift, carry and maneuver items, materials, and/or equipment up to 60 lbs.

Safely operate a variety of hand and power tools and light motorized equipment.

Maintain equipment and work supplies in a safe and functional manner.

Maintain a safe work environment and follow safety and policy procedures.

Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Learn to perform higher level facilities maintenance skilled craft areas, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical, heating, air conditioning and ventilation.

Use modern computers and applicable programs in a safe and efficient manner.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

The following combination of education and experience is most typically to provide the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities: Education equivalent to GED and/or specialized vocational training program courses in maintenance fundamentals and/or other related maintenance course work.

Six months of increasingly responsible experience related to maintenance and repair is desirable.
LICENSES:

Possession of or ability to obtain and maintain a valid California Driver's License.


SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
Position requires the ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time which include heavy lifting and carrying; and occasional bending, squatting, grasping, kneeling, pulling, pushing and twisting.
Continuous hand use and finger dexterity needed to operate standard office equipment, hand tools, equipment and machinery.
Frequent use of hand and foot controls for driving.
The position requires acute vision and hearing, in addition to a normal sense of smell, in order to detect the possible presence of waste or hazardous materials.
Normal duties involve frequent walking and standing at work sites to identify problems or hazards.


WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The work environment described herein is representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
Primarily field environment which involves travel from site to site.
Incumbent may be exposed to loud noise levels, extremes in temperature or humidity, dust, fumes, vibration, uneven surfaces, vehicle & moving equipment traffic and other elements.
Requires working at heights for specific assignments and operation of motorized vehicles, equipment and machinery.


Note: All employees of the City of Dana Point are designated by both State law and City ordinance to be "Disaster Service Workers."
In the event of a declared emergency or an undeclared emergency or natural disaster that threatens the life, health and/or safety of the public, employees may be assigned to assist rescue and relief workers.
Such assignments may be in locations, during hours and performing work significantly different from the employees' normal work assignments and may continue through the recovery phase of the emergency.

COMPREHENSIVE ANNUAL LEAVE (CAL) - Based upon years of service, employees accrue a specified number of hours per year to use for personal leave, sick leave, and/or vacation leave.
The annual CAL accrual schedule currently is as follows: Years 1-3: 120 CAL hours, Years 4-6: 160 CAL hours, Years 7-9: 200 CAL hours, Years 10+: 240 CAL hours.


PAID HOLIDAYS - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, President's Day, Friday before Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Veteran's Day, Thanksgiving Day, day after Thanksgiving, and Holiday Closure, Christmas Eve through New Year's Day.


ALTERNATIVE WORK SCHEDULES - Employee may have the option of working a 5/40 or alternatively a 9/80 work schedule with supervisor and department head approval.


RETIREMENT - The City is a member of the California Public Employees Retirement System (CALPERS).
The City's contract provides a 2%@55 formula for Classic Members and 2%@62 for New Members.
Employees are responsible for paying the full employee contribution toward the retirement system, which is currently 7%, plus an additional 2.00% for Classic Members; and for New Members, 7.75%.


HEALTH BENEFITS - The City has a cafeteria-style benefit program.
This position is currently provided a $1,718 monthly benefit allowance to use toward monthly insurance premiums.
The options include medical, dental, vision, life and disability insurance.
A 457 deferred compensation plan, and a Section 125/129 flexible spending account program is also available.
A small gym is located onsite at City Hall and is available for use by employees.


EDUCATION REIMBURSEMENT - The City may reimburse eligible employees for eligible education expenses, up to the cost of FT, in-state course work at a California State University
