Job Description: Position Summary: Harvey Mudd College is looking for a dynamic, experienced professional to fill the position of Major Gifts Officer. This individual will support the College's mission by raising funds from a portfolio of major gift prospects (capacity of $50,000+). As a member of the College Advancement team at Harvey Mudd College, the Major Gifts Officer (MGO) works in a highly collaborative environment to raise funds with a focus on securing gifts of $50,000+. This individual will work strategically to qualify, cultivate, solicit, and steward prospects/donors to meet established fundraising goals and objectives. The MGO will manage a portfolio of 120-150 prospects in various stages of the giving cycle with an initial emphasis on qualification.
The position will require close communication with and personal visits to prospective and current donors and may require frequent travel to specific regions within the U.S. This individual will prepare written gift proposals and other materials for use during donor cultivation and solicitation. While a focus will be placed on raising unrestricted or budget-relieving dollars, the MGO will also solicit blended or restricted gifts—often in partnership with colleagues. The MGO will work closely with various College constituencies and may assist with strategic planning and implementation for designated fundraising efforts—such as the Hixon Center for Climate and the Environment along with entrepreneurship, student success, and other initiatives. This individual will work with academic and volunteer leaders, including faculty and alumni. This individual will be responsible for all aspects of managing a portfolio, including entering contact reports and prospect strategies; donor stewardship; and tracking progress toward established goals.
Duties and Responsibilities: Successfully manage a portfolio of major gift prospects, including identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.Achieve established fundraising goals for restricted and unrestricted purposes.Achieve established activity goals to include contact attempts, meetings, and other substantive interactions.Create and articulate fundraising strategies and proposals for individual donors.Successfully manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.Partner with College and volunteer leadership to accomplish shared goals related to fundraising priorities.Demonstrate personal integrity and commitment to helping further the mission of HMC.Work both independently and as a collaborative member of the Advancement team in support of department goals and values.Travel to regions within California and throughout the U.S. to meet with key prospects and donors and assist or attend College events.Perform other duties as assigned.Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Strong fundraising skills and experience with individual giving.Successful major gift solicitation, including portfolio management.Strong communication skills (written and verbal).Ability to thrive in a collaborative team environment.Outstanding ability to respond to job-related requests from various constituents.High attention to detail.Respect for and ability to maintain confidential information.Mastery of standard office productivity software.Fundraising database experience preferred.Ability to work evenings and weekends.Ability to travel as needed.Required Qualifications: Education: Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent training.
Experience: Minimum of four years in a fundraising or sales/marketing environment.
Licenses/Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications: Five or more years of experience in a fundraising environment.Three or more years of experience in soliciting major and/or blended gifts.Advancement experience at an R-1 university or equivalent.Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of this job, the staff member is regularly required to sit, stand, use hands and fingers, and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms. The individual must regularly lift and/or carry up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
Hours: The regular hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday. This position requires some evening and weekend hours as well as local, regional, and national travel.
Classification: This is an exempt/salary position classified as full-time, 12-months year-round, and benefits-eligible position.
Salary: The anticipated starting salary is $90,000.00 - $110,000.00 annually.
Reporting: Reports to the Assistant Vice President of Development.
