Position Overview: The Managing Editor oversees the entire publication process for two leading academic journals, handling all aspects including financial management, content collection, peer review, production, and distribution. This role collaborates closely with the Director of Publications, Executive Editor, and the Editorial Board to develop and implement strategies that enhance the journals' reach and impact. Key Responsibilities of the Managing Editor: Manage the full publication process to ensure timely and accurate delivery of both journals. Coordinate and support the Editorial Boards and their activities, including organizing regular meetings and preparing presentations. Handle financial operations, including budgeting, payments, and vendor contracts. Collaborate with the Director of Publications and Editorial Boards to develop strategies for growth and influence. Oversee peer-review and production processes, ensuring efficiency and quality. Implement editorial and production strategies to streamline journal operations. Work with external partners to apply for indexing on key platforms. Provide training for authors, reviewers, and editors on relevant software and processes. Assist in modernizing and innovating departmental processes. Maintain standard operating procedures for the journals. Act as the primary contact for both internal teams and external vendors. Manage joint publishing projects and supervise the Publications Coordinator, ensuring quality and professional development. Qualifications of the Managing Editor: Bachelor's degree required. 5+ years of experience in an editorial office environment. 2+ years of experience managing staff. Strong background working with Editorial Boards and senior executives. Experience managing journal finances, including profit and loss (P/L). Excellent copyediting and writing skills, with a high level of accuracy in grammar and spelling. Strong project management skills, capable of handling multiple deadlines. Familiarity with peer review and production management software. Medical terminology knowledge is helpful but not required.
