SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:As the urgency for climate action intensifies globally, we are witnessing a concerning trend of speculative and high-risk marine geoengineering technologies being increasingly considered as potential 'solutions.' Technologies such as Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement or Marine Cloud Brightening that were once deemed unthinkable are now being actively promoted by private companies and supported by government policies and public resources, undermining urgently needed climate action and posing potentially catastrophic risks to communities and marine ecosystems.
The Marine Geoengineering Campaigner at CIEL will be instrumental in supporting work to confront the rising threats posed by marine geoengineering in order to protect people, ecosystems, and the planet. This early-career role will help educate coalition partners, decisionmakers, and the public about the dangers of marine geoengineering to the climate, biodiversity and human rights, and assist in advocating for genuine climate solutions that avoid expensive and dangerous distractions and technofixes. The position involves research, communications, policy and advocacy campaigns. They will collaborate extensively with civil society networks to advocate for protections and governance around marine geoengineering in international policy making spaces in order to enable a just transition away from fossil fuels. This is an important new role at CIEL, supervised by the Geoengineering Campaign Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES:Advocacy & Campaigning (60%)
Strategy: Support development and implementation of advocacy and communications campaigns aligning with CIEL's mission, in collaboration with other key staff.Expertise: Maintain a working knowledge of relevant policies, industry trends, actors, and issue areas.Relationships: Maintain effective working relationships with relevant partners, including NGOs, frontline/grassroots groups, Indigenous Peoples organizations, academics, scientists, as well as government agencies and intergovernmental organizations and/or other stakeholders.Policy Advocacy: Coordinate and collaborate with partners to expose the risks of marine geoengineering in key international fora and negotiations to strengthen governance that protects people and the planet.Communications / Media / Narrative: Work with the Communications Department to develop and implement a proactive communications strategy, to build public awareness of the risks and threats posed by marine geoengineering, including through educating and engaging journalists.Representation: Represent CIEL at and actively participate in relevant civil society networks and working groups and at public events.Research & Analysis (30%)
Develop and maintain solid expertise on relevant scientific, technical, political and regulatory frameworks and issue areas concerning marine geoengineering. Help conduct research to fill in specific research and knowledge gaps, including through preparing factsheets or briefing documents (e.g. education, outreach, and advocacy materials for a variety of audiences) for partners, policymakers, and media.Monitor key developments concerning marine geoengineering to inform strategies and interventions.Manage a balance between long-term research needs and urgent research/analysis in response to external demands and campaign opportunities.Prepare and disseminate (verbally and in writing) clear and compelling analyses to educate international audiences regarding marine geoengineering.Administration (10%)
Support project implementation, including using project management tools, coordinating specific initiatives, and convening meetings (online, in-person, hybrid).Assist in information flow within the CIEL Fossil Economy program and with other CIEL programs, especially Climate & Energy and Communications.Maintain timesheets and submit them on time.Meet periodically as requested, with supervisor and other team members.Participate in weekly staff and team meetings and other organizational activities, including an annual staff performance evaluation.Support fundraising efforts, such as proposals and reports, as relevant.Meet target dates, prioritize tasks, and ensure high-quality work products / outputs.QUALIFICATIONS:Minimum Qualifications:
2 years of relevant experience in advocacy campaigning.Experience working in and facilitating diverse groups, including working with frontline / grassroots groups.Basic familiarity with the risks and threats of the fossil fuel industry, and the environmental justice, human rights, health, and ecosystem (including oceans) impacts of false solutions to the climate crisis.Demonstrated project management skills and organization.Strong written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to distill key messages from technical information, legal arguments, research, and proposals, and translate them to different audiences.Demonstrated commitment to incorporating principles of justice, equity, and inclusion into all aspects of the work.Ability to successfully work on multiple priorities concurrently, including having strong planning and organizational skills, and ability to work well under pressure.Comfort admitting what you don't know and recognizing that seeking and receiving feedback is part of the learning process.Awareness of how your words and actions affect others, openness to and respect for others' perspectives.Ability to work both independently and in close coordination with a team.Able to travel internationally, and for periods of 1-2 weeks (public safety guidelines permitting).Desired Qualifications:
Professional proficiency in French and/or Spanish.Familiarity with international law and governance, particularly as it pertains to climate change, biodiversity, and geoengineering.Subject matter familiarity with geoengineering, marine protection issues, and /or marine geoengineering.A successful candidate will demonstrate the following competencies:

In our Washington, DC, USA office, provided you have obtained your own legal work authorization (CIEL cannot sponsor work visas).Remotely from the US, provided we are able to operate in that jurisdiction and you have obtained your own legal work authorization.While working in the US or our Geneva office is strongly preferred, CIEL has the capacity through an Employer of Record service to hire employees in certain jurisdictions outside of where we are headquartered. Thus, candidates may be eligible to work remotely from another country, depending on the other country and provided your work schedule can align with South/North American and African/European time zones. You must have obtained your own legal authorization to work and live in the country from which you wish to work.This is a full-time, exempt position. If you are selected for this position and elect to work remotely, you are expected to provide your own space from which to work. CIEL will contribute a one-time stipend of USD $750 for fully remote workers, with an additional USD $250 per year for the purposes of maintaining your remote work space.
