Essential Functions EXAMPLES OF TYPICAL JOB FUNCTIONS:Repairs, maintains, installs, inspects, troubleshoots, and adjusts a variety of mechanical equipment including pumps, motors, bearings, valves, hydraulic controls, regulators, piping systems, conveyors and oxygen production and distribution equipment, sluice gates, compressors, and flights, mechanical structural and plumbing apparatus, used in a wastewater treatment plant and related facilities.Performs routine maintenance and repair tasks on engines, such as changing oil, belts, and spark plugs; replaces filters; obtains oil and fuel samples; and takes hydrometer readings of coolant and battery fluids.
Maintains, installs, inspects, and repairs a variety of pumps including centrifugal, positive displacement, and screw; services, lubricates, adjusts chemical feed and processing equipment; determines excess wear and pump efficiencies; follows preventative and predictive maintenance practices.Performs complex mechanical maintenance, repairs, fabrication, and rebuilding of shop, field, and plant equipment used in wastewater plants and pump stations; works from work orders, drawings, specifications, schematics, sketches, and verbal and written instructions.Performs mechanical preventative and corrective maintenance on large scale wastewater treatment assets, systems, and processes including clarifiers, aeration basins, conveyor systems, storage tanks, slide gates, piping, valves and varied drive and control systems to maintain plant integrity, capacity, and operational reliability.Utilizes instrumentation to test and monitor the capabilities, limits, and effectiveness of equipment, subsystems of equipment and other mechanical processes and systems; measures on-going effectiveness of systems and assures the quality of maintenance or improvements.Inspects, tests, calibrates, and records readings for a variety of mechanical systems and equipment to meet reliable equipment life and service expectations; assists in planning and coordinating scheduled maintenance activities; minimizes service interruption due to unplanned outages, shutdowns, and other emergency situations.Modifies, rebuilds, and relocates plan assets and equipment during wastewater construction and improvement projects.Please visit for the full job description.
Minimum QualificationsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Education: Equivalent to a High School Diploma.Experience:Tech I: One (1) year of experience in the maintenance of mechanical and/or electrical equipment.Tech II: Four (4) years of progressively responsible experience performing duties similar to a Mechanical Maintenance Technician I with the District or other similar agency.Licenses and Certifications: Possession of a valid California Driver's License, to be maintained throughout employment.
ANDTech I: Possession of a valid Mechanical Technologist Grade I certification from the California Water Environment Association, to be maintained throughout employment.Tech II: Possession of a valid Mechanical Technologist Grade II certification from the California Water Environment Association, to be maintained throughout employment.Knowledge of:Principles, practices, methods, equipment, materials, and tools used in the maintenance and repair of District wastewater treatment plant facilities including applicable codes.Principles and techniques used in preventative maintenance inspection and general repair of pumps, motors, valves and hydrants, regulators, valve compressors, hydraulic systems, and related mechanical components.Diagnostic analysis through failure mode, and root cause analysis using traditional analog and precision digital instruments to ensure critical measurements and alignments as part of diagnostic and predictive maintenance.Safe application, operation, and maintenance of tools and equipment used in the mechanical and electrical trades.Occupational hazards and safety equipment and practices related to the work including confined space requirements.Basic arithmetic.Principles and procedures of record-keeping and reporting.
District and mandated safety rules, regulations, and protocols.Techniques for providing a high level of customer service by effectively dealing with the public, vendors, contractors, and District staff.The structure and content of the English language to effectively perform the work.Modern equipment and communication tools used for business functions and program, project, and task coordination, including computers and software programs relevant to work performed.Operational characteristics, and the safe and proper use of, machinery, tools, equipment, and materials necessary to perform assigned duties.Ability to: Perform a variety of complex technical tasks in the installation, repair, and maintenance of District wastewater treatment equipment.
Use a diverse range of diagnostic tools to identify maintenance needs.Skillfully and safely operate a variety of equipment and power and hand tools used in the mechanical maintenance field.Troubleshoot wastewater treatment equipment problems.Estimate necessary materials and equipment to complete assignments.
Prepare records and basic reports.
Read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals, drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and electrical schematics.
Make accurate arithmetic calculations.Maintain accurate logs, records, and basic written records of work performed.Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and procedural guidelines.Effectively use computer systems, software applications relevant to work performed, and modern business equipment to perform a variety of work tasks.Establish, maintain, and foster positive and effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work.
