Overview Conducts routine tests for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease, and performs related duties, following established standards and practices. Performs blood tests and studies morphology of constituents of blood to obtain data for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Performs various bacteriological, mycological, virological, and parasitological tests to provide data on cause and progress of disease. Often directs other staff members such as MLT and Phlebotomist.
Responsibilities Provide quality specimens for testing assuring correct patient identification, using proper tubes and filling properly, documentation of all performance improvement forms and/or logs. Perform maintenance and updates on instrument and be familiar with all instrument operations and limitations. Assure accurate results by performing quality control and instrument troubleshooting procedures. Perform testing in a timely manner to include stat, urgent, and routine turnaround time requirements. Validate all specimen results prior to reporting. Assume departmental responsibilities to assure that the department is maintained to COLA standards at all times. Follow safety standards and use safe work practices. Assist in continuing education and procedure updates. Qualifications Education: Bachelor's degree required in medical technology or one of the sciences and eligible by experience, education, or training to sit for the MT (ASCP) exam or equivalent alternate exam.

Additional Skills/Abilities: Certified or eligible as a medical technologist by the ASCP, AAB, AMT, NCA, HEW. Completes hospital and departmental orientation. Ability to work in a stressful environment. Ability to remember multiple procedures and policies. Willingness to work irregular hours with varying assignments. Understanding of safe work practices. Ability to make critical decisions rapidly and accurately. Ability to direct subordinates.
