We are looking to hire a Medical Writer, with a background in English Literature, Journalism, or Communications and previous experience at a publication to support the Sold Content and Special Projects team.
The Medical Writer of Vision Special Projects is responsible for writing, editing, and proofreading copy for a clinical audience, including print and digital materials, promotional publications, and multimedia activities. This role is integral in ensuring projects are completed on time, within budget, and exceed client objectives. The ideal candidate will also be active in streamlining operations and facilitating collaboration with other business divisions.
What a day in the life of a Medical Writer, Special Projects looks like: Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):
Ensure all pieces are compliant with journal and AMA style, as well as specific brand guidelines. Write, proofread, and approve copy for publication; perform first and second edits of copy, facilitate incorporation of author edits and copyeditor proofs. Develop a strong attention to detail, organization, and adherence to best practices. Develop a thorough understanding of medical terminology, product landscapes, and disease states. Contribute to production, including sending articles to art, live InDesign files, final fit, and to printer stages. Communicates efficiently and proactively to the client and authors throughout the full project cycle. Understand the client processes and priorities, medical legal compliance practices, and keep these in mind when working with the internal team in executing projects. Organize, verify, and annotate references and images, figures, data tables, and other data graphics. Coordinate extramural reviews with clients and physicians. Additional responsibilities will include general copy editing; blueline and other page proof reviews; and organizing and leading interviews. Support senior team members with large or complex projects, such as symposia slide decks, virtual webinars, podcast and video scripting, advisory board support, and more. What we expect from qualified candidates: Bachelor's degree or higher in English, journalism, communications, or a related field. 5-7 years of substantive editing, copyediting, and proofreading, requiring little supervision. Excellent composition and writing skills. Strong command of the English language, including grammar and syntax. Familiarity with AMA style preferred or willingness to learn. Thorough knowledge of publishing process (handling and fitting InDesign files, adhering to printer deadlines) or willingness to learn. Ability to establish and oversee deadlines. Familiarity with cataract, refractive, glaucoma, and/or retina content preferred but not required. Skilled at interviewing physicians and industry members. A customer service orientation and great interpersonal skills. Experience with project management tools used for task/time/resource management. Knowledge of Word, InDesign (or other typesetting program), and web publishing platforms or willingness to learn. Strong attention to detail, organization, and adherence to best practices. Evening and weekend work may be required. Ability to travel up to 30%.
