MacNeal Hospital's Behavioral Health Services Department is an adult psychiatric department, with five units and 69 beds.
Unit size ranges from 11 to 14 beds.
We provide comprehensive care for a wide spectrum of psychiatric diagnosis and alcohol detoxification.

Job Duties:
The Mental Health Counselor/Technician works as part of a multi-disciplinary team, to provide behavioral intervention based on assessed needs for patients with related psychiatric conditions.
Is knowledgeable about the assigned patient's treatment goals and intervenes as identified in the treatment plan.
Is able to implement assigned aspects of the treatment plan under supervision.
Facilitates or leads group psychoeducational sessions in the milieu and documents the sessions.
Effectively sets limits in the milieu, both with consistency and flexibility when necessary.
Maintains a structured, therapeutic environment that addresses the age, developmental and psychological needs of the patient and includes individual time with assigned patients and conducting psycho-educational and other group activities per the unit schedule.
In coordination with the Registered Nurse and the interdisciplinary team of the department, provides behavioral intervention based on assessed needs for patients.
Routinely performs patient care duties.
Provides a safe and therapeutic environment and may assist in the admission, provision of patient care, discharge, and transfer of patients.
Provides all services following established hospital/departmental policies and procedures.
Monitors patient's mental and social functioning and patient's response to treatment and report changes to RN/MD to assure optimal patient outcomes.
Actively provides input on patients in shift report.
Documents in the patient chart significant patient care observations, as observed through group, individual sessions, and within the milieu.
Participates in the development and ongoing review of the patient's treatment plan and progress towards goals.
Records patient observations, interventions, and outcomes in progress notes and flow sheets.

- Chronic Diagnosis/Intensive Treatment Unit:
o This unit provides ample opportunity to strengthen de-escalation skills and provides a robust understanding of precipitating factors for mental illness and the effects of institutionalization.
- Geriatric Unit
o This unit provides care for behavioral health patients with depressive disorders, bipolar or schizophrenia in conjunction with aging and/or multiple other comorbidities.
General Inpatient Psychiatric Units:
o This unit provides trauma informed care in a supportive environment to help individuals struggling with major depressive disorder, anxiety, alcohol or substance detoxification, and postpartum depression
