The Municipality of Mt. Lebanon, Pennsylvania (pop. 34,075), a suburban Pittsburgh community of six square miles, is seeking an experienced, progressive fire professional to serve as Fire Chief. The Department is one of 498 ISO Class 1 Fire Departments in the nation and is one of 311 Accredited Agencies in the United States and Canada. The Mt. Lebanon Fire Department operates from one state-of-the-art fire station with a new outdoor training facility under construction. It has 18 full-time employees, approximately 50 volunteers, and an annual budget of about $3.8 million. In 2023, the Department responded to 2,214 calls for service.
Appointed by the Municipal Manager under the advice and consent of the five-member elected Commission, the Fire Chief is a critical part of our public safety team and is a recognized community leader. A bachelor's degree in fire science, public administration, business administration, or a related field is required; a master's degree in a related field is preferred. A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible experience in a fire department, with at least five years at a platoon chief or higher level, is required. Experience with a combination department and experience working with other communities to provide mutual aid is preferred. A history of successful collective bargaining experience, and working with unionized personnel and organizations, is preferred. It is also preferred that the candidate be a graduate of the National Fire Academy's Executive Fire Officer Program and be a Credentialed Chief Fire Officer through the Commission on Professional Credentialling and be IFSAC "Blue Card" Command Certified.
This position offers a highly competitive salary, with a range of $127,930 to $140,405, depending on qualifications, in addition to a comprehensive benefits package.
