The Peabody Essex Museum (PEM), one of the largest and most dynamic art museums in the nation, is seeking a NAGPRA Project Manager.
For over 220 years, PEM has been an anchor in the community, serving as a gathering place where anyone can learn, derive inspiration, and gain a deeper appreciation for shared human experiences from around the globe and through time.
The Museum's collection of art, architecture and culture includes more than 850,000 objects, 23 historic structures and more than 350,000 books and over a linear mile of manuscripts.
Under the supervision of the Director of Collections and Registration, the NAGPRA Project Manager will support the Peabody Essex Museum with overseeing compliance, consultations, repatriations, and other activities associated with ensuring the Museum's fulfillment of the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).
This position is for a fixed-term of 3 years and the hiring range for this role is $67,525 to $71,629 commensurate with experience.
The NAGPRA Project Manager will play a key role in managing, tracking, and evaluating the progress of core NAGPRA projects and initiatives of the museum.
Works with sensitive collections and content which requires attentiveness to cultural protocols.
Works respectfully with tribal communities in ways that acknowledge tribal sovereignty, cultural protocols, and cultural and religious practices and knowledge.
Works to support PEM's goals around the timely and respectful return of Native American ancestors and cultural items.
B.A.in Native American Studies, Visual Studies, Museum Studies or Art History is preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
At least three to five years of NAGPRA experience, curatorial experience, or similar is preferred.
Familiarity with NAGPRA regulations along with the compliance and procedures for completing NAGPRA inventories and summaries along with the ability to work with tribal governments and Indigenous communities and follow best practices for community engagement are a plus.
