is an entrepreneurial research institute in life sciences that focuses on basic science and translating scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications. VIB's Innovation & Business team manages a portfolio of +250 patent families and looks for partnering deals with the industry in a pro-active and creative way. VIB is also firmly rooted in a long-standing tradition of setting up start-up companies. Since its foundation in 1996, VIB has created >30 start-up companies. VIB is funded by the Flemish government and works in close partnership with five Flemish universities – Ghent University, KU Leuven, University of Antwerp, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Hasselt University. The link between basic research and valorization has made VIB a catalyst for the ever-growing biotech hotspot in Flanders.
VIB's
Innovation & Business (I&B) team
consists of IP, business development, new venture and discovery sciences professionals supported by a skilled administrative and paralegal team. The team is highly complementary and works closely together to create value out of the scientific inventions from the institute.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated internship candidate who is eager to obtain practical experience in new venture creation, with an emphasis on analyst work. The candidate will be trained by a dynamic and multidisciplinary experienced team and gain knowledge in a multitude of real-life new venture opportunities across a wide range of scientific topics.
Function
We are looking for a highly motivated pro-active colleague of proven maturity in a professional environment and a strong scientific background in life sciences, to help drive the research to venture transition for VIB scientific innovations. You will work closely with VIB NV managers to analyse novel opportunities and prepare for venture creation.
You will dig deep into novel science or innovations and perform competitive landscaping, IP searches and benchmarking
You will perform detailed target analysis, technology diligence and identify USPs of novel opportunities
You will work across of broad range of scientific topics – from therapeutics to novel technologies, to ag & food
You will work closely with NV managers as well as the IP, BD and Discovery Sciences teams within the Innovation and business team.
Profile
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic candidate with high independence, willingness to learn, and openness to new experiences.
Who you are:
PhD in life sciences and experience in life sciences research
Have an interest in diverse life science topics - you're excited about novel scientific findings across a diverse range of topics. You like to dig into biology.
Have a basic understanding of intellectual property and patents, ideally, you have taken part in a course on technology transfer or valorisation
Good, open communication skills and fluent in English, both oral and written
Well organised, a good communicator and pragmatic
Strong analytical skills, you like deskwork
Ability to motivate and work with others in a highly collaborative environment
Entrepreneurial and hands-on mentality
Enthusiasm and energy (the "fun" factor )
