Job Description

The Times is looking for a news assistant to join our National desk.


The National desk is a team that leads the newsroom's coverage of the United States across all Times platforms.
The ideal candidate will be an engaged and collegial team member with a strong interest in news.
Organization, adaptability and a desire to learn new skills are critical to success in this role.
Writing skills and a passion for Times journalism are a must, as many of our news assistants may be called upon to help with research and reporting.


This is a hybrid position based in New York City and includes regular attendance in the office each week per your departmental guidance.


This is a Guild position reporting to the Deputy Director, News Operations.


Responsibilities: You will compile weather highlights and slugs, configure pages in Cue Print and release two editions of weather pages.
You will assist with breaking news coverage by creating and maintaining feeds documents and live blogs, research and verify information for reporters and editors.
You will update, confirm and contact stringers across the nation as needed for coverage.
Research and produce daily news and social scans to keep editors aware of developments the desk may cover.
Find and add a collection of CA focused stories to the daily California Today newsletter.
Attend daily meetings and take detailed notes that will then be shared with the department Ensure smooth communication between editors, reporters, photographers and freelancers by keeping contact lists updated.
Work closely with editors and reporters to perform a wide range of operational and administrative duties essential to the desk.
While reporting and rewriting shall not be a general requirement of the work of a news assistant, any employee so classified may be required to perform such work in limited amounts for no additional compensation.
The amount of reporting and rewriting a news assistant is permitted to perform without additional compensation shall result in the publication of no more than 1500 words in any given month, absent a bona fide news emergency.

Basic Qualifications: 2+ years of related experience Familiarity with Google Workspace (Google Docs, Sheets, Forms, Slides) Ability to multitask and prioritize to meet deadlines Excellent troubleshooting and problem solving skills Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree preferred.

The annual base pay salary for this role is between $66,300.00 and $67,000.00.
