As a key member of the Aquatics team, this position supervises daily pool activities for patrons and is responsible for proactive communication and maintaining a safe pool atmosphere while preventing accidents. The purpose of this position is to provide a safe environment for members and program participants.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Model the YMCA character valuesMinimum age of 16Current lifeguard certifications required (including Jefferson County Board of Health if required)Excellent oral and written communication skillsPrevious lifeguard and/or swim instructor experience preferredPeople centered, service orientedTeam player with personal commitment to the YMCA Mission, Philosophy, & Character Development ValuesESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Uphold the Mission of the YMCAMaintains constant surveillance of the pool areaKnows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and proceduresCompletes all related reports as required by the YMCA of Greater LouisvilleKnows, understands, and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic areaMaintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the local Health Department codePerforms equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as neededChecks the pool for hazardous conditions when arrivingPerforms chemical testing as required by the Aquatics' DirectorAttends all staff meetings and training as required by the Aquatics' DirectorMaintains effective relationships with the members, participants and other staffMaintain all certifications as required to keep the Lifeguard certification currentWork all assigned shifts and/or follow appropriate substitution policiesAttends all staff meetings and trainings as required by the Aquatics' Director PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Ability to pass lifeguard water testMust be able to remain alertWork in a wet/humid environment and come into contact with chlorineMust be able to sit or stand for extended periodsAdequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signalsAbility to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear visionAbility to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescueAbility to communicate verbally, including projecting voice across distance in normal and loud situationsEnvironment may include indoor and/or outdoor pool conditionsAbility to lift 25 poundsNoise level-HighSTATUS:Part-time, Non-Exempt
STARTING SALARY: $15.00/hour opening shift only
