The Capital Area Division (CAD) of Applied Research Associates, Inc. (ARA) is seeking an Operations Research Analyst to support the Department of Homeland Security's (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate (S&T). DHS S&T is responsible for conducting and coordinating Research and Development (R&D) activities across the Department to research, develop, transition, and integrate cutting-edge capabilities to DHS Components, as well as to monitor and maintain the adequacy and operation of existing capabilities.
As a valued contributor to our team, you will support and conduct projects requiring interdisciplinary operations research methods including mathematical modeling, simulation, statistics, and data analysis. This includes but is not limited to developing and applying models and concepts that help to illuminate management issues and suggest solutions approaches using predictive analytics, geospatial analysis, big data analysis, optimization, game theory, forecasting, process and mathematical modeling, and probability and statistics. 
Applicants for this position will support a variety of requirements and analysis projects for a range of government sponsors. Successful candidates will:
Exercise considerable originality to define problems, visualize approaches, and coordinate technical guidance Apply and extend new methods require innovative operations research or mathematical approaches Coordinate completed studies and analyses with DHS Headquarters, Component staffs, and stakeholders such as technical subject matter experts from Federally Funded Research and Development Centers (FFRDCs), national laboratories, universities, and interagency partners Perform complex, highly specialized analyses – systems analysis, requirements analysis, gap analysis, operations analysis, cost analysis, and systems engineering – that will inform DHS enterprise-wide investment decisions The selected applicant will be subject to a government security investigation and must meet eligibility for DHS suitability/fitness and for access to classified information.
Required Qualifications: An analytic mindset, with strong problem-solving abilities Eagerness to learn new tools and techniques Strong verbal and written communication skills Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Teams, SharePoint), including advanced skills with Excel Experience providing authoritative and defensible analyses, assessments, and recommendations supporting senior leadership decisions Experience working with multiple stakeholder groups to reach consensus decisions Familiarity with one or more of the following languages: Python, R, SQL, MATLAB, SAS, Stata, SPSS Must be a U.S. Citizen Must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance Bachelors degree or higher in Operations Research or related field with 1-2 years of related experience Desired Qualifications: Familiarity with DHS Component operations, including U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), United States Coast Guard (USCG), United States Custom and Border Protection (CBP), Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA), Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC), United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), United States Secret Service (USSS), and Transportation Security Administration (TSA) Familiarity with workflow analysis and data manipulation tools like Alteryx, Tableau Prep, or Knime Experience with modeling and simulation and familiarity with tools like NetLogo, Arena, ExtendSim, JaamSim Active DHS Suitability S. in Operations Research or related field COMPANY INFORMATION: Applied Research Associates, Inc. is an employee-owned international research and engineering company recognized for providing technically superior solutions to complex and challenging problems in the physical sciences.
