An Ophthalmic Technician, also known as an ophthalmic medical technician or ophthalmic assistant, is a healthcare professional who plays a critical role in eye care by assisting ophthalmologists (medical doctors specializing in eye care) and optometrists (eye care professionals who provide primary vision care).
Ophthalmic technicians are responsible for a wide range of tasks related to patient care, diagnostics, and administrative support within ophthalmic practices and eye clinics.
Ophthalmic Technician experience is a must.
Requirements: High School education Minimum (2) years exp in an Ophthalmology Practice Very strong Refraction exp is a must Technician skills and experience to perform Pupil exams, Visual Fields, Topography, Immersion, Glare Testing, Pachymetry, OCT, A-Scan/B-Scran/IOL Master, Fundus Photos, Schirmer Test, Amslers, Keratometry, Fluorescein Angiography.
Excellent communication skills and team player PREFERRED: 5 yrs Opthalmic Technician exp College degree COA / COT certificaion Key responsibilities of an ophthalmic technician typically include: 1.
Patient Assessment: Gathering and recording patients' medical histories and chief complaints to help determine the reason for their visit and any relevant medical conditions.

Preliminary Testing: Conducting various diagnostic tests and measurements to assess visual acuity, intraocular pressure, visual field, and other ophthalmic parameters.
3.
Assisting with Procedures: Assisting ophthalmologists and optometrists in various clinical and surgical procedures, including eye examinations, imaging tests, contact lens fittings, and minor surgical procedures.
4.
Diagnostic Imaging: Operating specialized ophthalmic equipment, such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) machines, fundus cameras, and ultrasound devices, to capture images and scans of the eye's internal structures.
5.
Patient Education: Providing patient education on eye conditions, treatment options, contact lens or eyeglass care, and post-operative instructions.
6.
Equipment Maintenance: Ensuring that ophthalmic equipment is properly cleaned, calibrated, and maintained for accurate and safe operation.
7.
Patient Support: Offering emotional support to patients, addressing their concerns, and ensuring their comfort during procedures and visits.
8.
Record Keeping: Maintaining and organizing patient records, including test results, treatment plans, and billing information, in compliance with healthcare regulations.
9.
Administrative Tasks: Handling administrative responsibilities such as scheduling appointments, managing patient files, processing insurance claims, and coordinating referrals to other specialists if necessary.
10.
Compliance: Adhering to patient privacy regulations (e.g., Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act or HIPAA) and other legal and ethical standards.
1- At least one -year experience in ophthalmic industry is a must, strong healthcare experience accepted and will train.
2- COA or COT is preferred.
3- Ophthalmic technicians often work in ophthalmology practices, eye clinics, and hospitals, and they interact directly with patients, so strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential.
To become an ophthalmic technician, individuals may complete formal training programs, earn certifications, or acquire on-the-job experience under the supervision of licensed eye care professionals.
