Ophthalmology Assistant

Description: SUMMARY: Responsible for providing aid to ophthalmologists by obtaining medical records, performing preliminary eye function testing and explaining to patients about medication or procedures. Work closely with an ophthalmologist, gathering patient information necessary to complete a diagnosis. Assistants often see the patient before the ophthalmologist, and are often responsible for preparing the patient for the exam and beginning the examination with standard tests and measurements. POSITION REQUIREMENTS: Gather medical records and patient information Take ocular measurements, both anatomical and functional Administer or preparing medications Provide eye care and contact lens information to the patient Maintain and clean ophthalmic instruments Assist the ophthalmologist in basic procedures Review patient charts prior to exam to anticipate procedures and supplies or equipment that may be needed Document exam findings correctly in patient charts as dictated by the doctor Ensure fee slips are correctly marked with proper modifiers Code patient visits in EyeMD for insurance Able to perform diagnostic testing when needed Perform a variety of clinical tasks (IOP check, install drops into patient's eyes if needed) Instruct patients with verbal and written instructions regarding any medications and treatments Answer patient questions and make follow up phone calls when needed Take Triage Calls and send over medication refills Assist doctor with minor surgical procedures Clean and sterilize equipment Maintain patient confidentiality Other duties as assigned Requirements: PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: One year experience in an Ophthalmology setting High school diploma (or GED) required Certification by Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO) Knowledge of ocular diseases and systemic diseases affecting the eye Knowledge of ultrasound and visual field machines Problem solver with analytical skills Personable and empathetic toward patient's needs and concerns Well-organized with attention to detail PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Works well with a team Excellent verbal and written communication skills Dependable and punctual Excellent computer skills Positive attitude and outlook Critical Thinking PI0e1ad2a5a2ff-26276-34616627
