Job Summary The Optometrist is responsible for the efficient and effective delivery of clinical services to our un'ina (patient). The Optometrist examines un'ina eyes, tests their sight, gives advice on visual problems, and prescribes and fits spectacles or contact lenses when needed. The Optometrist is trained to recognize diseases of the eye, such as glaucoma and cataracts, as well as general health conditions such as diabetes. The Optometrist will refer un'ina to medical practitioners when necessary and sometimes share the care of un'ina with chronic conditions. The Optometrist is accountable for ensuring their practice operates as specified in grants and contracts in accordance with applicable statutes and regulations, the Tribes' policies and procedures, and professional ethics.

Essential Functions Examining the eyes of un'ina of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality, or vision defects. Checking for signs and symptoms of general health conditions (e.g. diabetes, hypertension, etc.). Using specialized equipment for diagnosis and testing. Prescribing medications and treatments as permitted by State laws. Providing pre and post-operative care for patients undergoing cataract and refractive surgery procedures where indicated. Issuing prescriptions for spectacles or contact lenses. Fitting and checking prescribed lenses to correct vision defects. Providing advice and reassurance about vision-related matters; offering help and advice for un'ina choosing frames and lenses. Writing referral communications to doctors and communicating with other medical practitioners, sometimes sharing the care of un'ina with chronic ophthalmic conditions. Fulfilling continuing education requirements. Ensuring compliance with Tribal, federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, Tribal policies, and TERO ordinance. OSHA Categories Category I - Duties performed routinely require exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue. Equipment and Tools List Equipment used for job: Computer, copier, fax, scanner, and other office equipment.

Travel Local In-State Out-of-State Comments: Travel for training and meetings may be required.

Qualifications Education Doctorate degree in Optometry. Successful passage of all parts of National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) national board exam. Experience Three (3) years of experience. Current Alaska State Optometry License in good standing. Current DEA certificate, BLS certification required. A valid Alaska Driver's License and remain insurable under the Tribe's policy. Special Skills Critical thinking abilities with a high degree of accuracy. Excellent problem-solving skills. Good organizational and administrative skills with attention to detail. The ability to keep up to date and apply scientific and technological principles, methods, and developments. Excellent customer service skills with strong ethical standards. Knowledge and understanding of HIPAA and other regulations. Ability to work in a team setting. Knowledge of Electronic Health Records and Systems. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Preferred Knowledge and experience with cultural diversities. This position is a Covered Position subject to all requirements of the Alaska Barrier Crimes Act (ABCA) and to the Indian Child Protection and Family Violence Prevention Act (ICPA). ABCA and ICPA requirements apply and must be complied with at all times in order to remain in the position.
