The Painter performs painting work at the journey level by preparing surfaces for painting, plasters and/or paints building interiors, exteriors, road, and parking services.
The role requires the ability to provide estimates for paint jobs, select appropriate colors, ensure products used are correctly applied and follow the material safety data sheets (MSDS) as directed.
A typical workday is Mon-Fri, 7:00am-3:30pm.
Responsibilities and Duties Applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel or lacquer to decorate and protect interior or exterior surfaces.
Prepares surfaces for painting by scraping, burning, sandpapering or dissolving previous paint coatings.
Fills nail holes, cracks, and joints with caulk or putty.
Tapes, spackles, and finishes dry wall.
Removes fixtures, spreads drop cloths, and covers surfaces to protect during painting.
Selects, mixes, and matches paints.
Prepares estimates of time, labor and materials.
Prepares reports reflecting daily operations and project status.
Operates and maintains tools and equipment of the painting trade.
May erect and work from scaffolding and ladders.
Cleans work area upon completion of project.
Provides guidance and training in painting work to other maintenance personnel.
May have lead responsibility for special projects.
Qualifications and Skills Four years progressively responsible experience in the painting trade.
Comprehensive knowledge of and skill in the methods and techniques used in the painting trade.
Thorough knowledge of and skill in basic mathematics including area, volume, weights, and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions; of OSHA regulations related to the painting trade.
Skill in the use and maintenance of the tools and equipment of the painting trade.
Ability to schedule and lay out work; to perceive the normal color spectrum; to prepare summaries and reports; to communicate effectively and follow oral and written directions; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders, rigging, and scaffolding; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 70 lbs.
; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on equipment and machinery; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather or temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.
Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job.
Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C or equivalent driver's license required.
Candidates selected for employment may be required to be trained to work with asbestos.
Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience, and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Salary and Benefits
$46,736 annually and full University benefits that includes annual leave, up to 15 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
When applicable, a 2.5% increase may be added to the annual salary, pending successful completion of the initial six-month probationary period, for this position.
