Fralin Biomedical Research Institute at VTC in Roanoke, VA, is dedicated to the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of lifestyle-related diseases. The Mishra Lab at FBRI is looking for a Part Time Research Assistant to work primarily on AHA-funded research projects related to cardiometabolic disease. This position is ideal for candidates passionate about molecular biology, epigenomics, and chromatin biology. The primary responsibility of this position is to perform recombinant DNA technology, cloning, gene silencing experiments, and other standard molecular techniques. Manage laboratory equipment and inventory and ensure proper functioning of lab instruments. Oversee breeding, weaning, and genotyping, and provision of help for data collection for in vitro and in vivo research projects.
The successful candidate should be detail oriented, enjoy a fast-paced research environment, and have some prior experience in a lab setting. The candidate must have excellent interpersonal skills and be comfortable working with a diverse population. Knowledge in basic computer skills, record keeping and experience with data collection is required.
There is an opportunity for the candidate to participate in research publications, grant writing, and attendance at national scientific conferences, if eligible and appropriate. The successful applicant will also be expected to actively contribute to lab meetings, analyze data, assist in the preparation of peer-reviewed manuscripts, and support grant proposal development and submissions.
Required Qualifications
• Background in epigenomics and chromatin biology.
• Prior experience in molecular biology techniques such as cloning, recombinant DNA technology, and gene silencing.
• Experience with basic laboratory protocols including proper handling of subject specimens, data collection, participant recruitment, assessments, and data management.
• Strong communication, interpersonal, organizational and team skills
• Capable of working independently and as part of a team
• Ability to organize and analyze experimental data.
• Demonstrated computer skills and experience using Microsoft applications
Preferred Qualifications
• Basic lab experience including dilutions, weighing chemicals, and understand proper chemical handling
• Experience with lab equipment, such as centrifuge, pH meter, and balance
• Ability to work independently and manage time effectively
• Demonstrated communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to effectively follow instructions
• Demonstrated skills in using computer software
• Demonstrated interpersonal, analytical, and problem-solving skills with strong attention to detail
• Demonstrated ability to interact respectfully and comfortably with all individuals in a diverse, multicultural environment, exercising judgement and high degree of confidentiality
• Coursework or degree in Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field
