Job Summary
· Alcorn Writing Center peer consultants work face-to-face and online with clients from across the curriculum and university community.
· Peer consultants offer support at all stages of the writing process, including pre-writing, drafting, revising, and editing.
· Peer consultants provide writing assistance for a broad range of academic activities: assigned papers; creative work; laboratory reports; research papers; cover letters for internships or graduate school; senior theses.
· Upon request, peer consultants work with professors to provide special assistance—to groups and individuals—in writing and critical reading. Tutors may also be asked to work regularly with students who speak English as a second language or students with special needs or circumstances.
· Peer consultants help the director and assistant director with administrative tasks and special projects, as needed.
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
· Writing Center peer consultants must support their staff colleagues in maintaining the integrity and efficiency of this student-run support service.
· Peer consultants must be dependable and punctual in their duties, in the completion of assigned tasks, and in notifying the appropriate staff personnel when conflicts or problems occur.
· Peer consultants must maintain the confidentiality of Writing Center clients and services.
Writing Center peer consultant duties include: offering writing support to clients from across the ASU community; preparing written reports of each consultation; attending a weekly training / staff meeting; completing training assignments for weekly training; maintaining the orderly operation of the Writing Center (making appointments, checking supplies, filing, administrative tasks, flexibility in work hours to ensure adequate coverage, and so on); assisting and mentoring tutor trainees; notifying supervisor of needs or difficulties; providing input and suggestions to improve our operation; completing other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
· Peer consultants must participate effectively in training sessions and staff meetings.
Essential Job Functions
· To be considered for employment as a Writing Center peer consultant, a candidate must have demonstrated significant writing ability confirmed by a teacher recommendation.
· Peer writing consultants must already possess advanced communication skills, including proficiency in digital communication technology (e.g., Microsoft Office suite).
· Peer writing consultants must be able to work effectively with Writing Center clients from across the curriculum at any stage of the writing process (from pre-writing to drafting, revising, and editing).
· Peer writing consultants must be trustworthy, reliable, and detail-oriented.
· Peer writing consultants must possess a positive attitude towards colleagues and clients.
· Peer writing consultants must be able to work independently and to take initiative in fulfilling responsibilities.
· Peer writing consultants must commit to reflection and growth in their practices; therefore, they take feedback seriously.
Qualifications
An applicant must have a minimum GPA of 3.5; have conducted at least three Writing Center consultations in the past academic year; and receive a recommendation from an instructor who can confirm the candidate's significant writing ability. Qualified applicants must also have successfully completed EN 112 (or an equivalent course approved by the Alcorn Writing Center director).

· Personal statement / cover letter: one-page letter in which a candidate answers the following questions: Why do you want to work as a peer consultant (tutor) in the Alcorn Writing Center? What capabilities do you bring to the position? How do you expect to contribute to your fellow students and to the Writing Center?
