Areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to: Professional Responsibilities:
Compliance with Sheridan policies/procedures as stated in the personnel handbook Regular and punctual attendance Participation in staff meetings, including division, department, grade-level, open meetings, etc. Completion of non-teaching duties, including dismissal, lunch and recess Participation in school-wide events, including assemblies, open houses, Back to School Night, etc. Compliance with deadlines (newsletters, report cards, etc) Participation in regular goal-setting, reflection and professional growth opportunities Responsibility for upkeep of classroom, equipment, bulletin boards and stage area Instruction & Curriculum :
Alignment with Sheridan mission, philosophy and program goals Effective implementation of physical education curriculum Refinement/adaptation of curriculum to meet needs of students Documentation of units of study, using backwards-design model Use of a variety of instructional strategies suitable to the age and needs of a diverse set of students and subject matter being taught Responsiveness to suggestions by Director of Student Support and/or Counselor to support student learning Active participation in Mountain Campus trips Purchasing of supplies/materials to support student learning, using allotted classroom budget Planning of relevant field trips Assessment & Feedback:
Implementation of a comprehensive assessment and feedback system that aligns with learning goals and Sheridan grading practices Facilitation of student-involved conferences Documentation of student achievement/progress using Sheridan report card Classroom Community
Creation of a nurturing, inclusive, safe classroom culture, using the Responsive Classroom model, that fosters respect, understanding and embracing differences Implementation of effective, mission-aligned classroom management system Establishment of positive relationships with students, which, while recognizing the differing roles of students and adults, are characterized by mutual respect and goodwill Collaboration & Communication
Collaboration with physical education team to successfully plan, document and implement curriculum Collaboration with homeroom teachers on morning meetings, homework load, grade-level expectations, etc. Collaboration with colleagues on school-wide initiatives Regular, timely communication with families regarding student progress, via email, phone call or meetings Creation of department newsletters via Classtag to keep families informed about curriculum Minimum Qualifications Bachelors Degree Mastery of skills/content/understandings of subject(s) taught, including yoga, movement/dance, sports and physical fitness, and knowledge of developmental stages of students taught Experience using standard office equipment and school technology Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a team Effective communication skills (written and verbal) About Sheridan School
Sheridan is an independent, co-educational, K-8 school located in northwest Washington, DC, offering a progressive, concept-based curriculum that promotes social justice and utilizes Reading and Writing Workshop, Math in Focus and Responsive Classroom. Each grade has about 25 students in one homeroom with two teachers. Departmental classes are taught in smaller sections outside of the homeroom by content specialists.Sheridan strives to create a diverse and equitable learning environment, and we are fully committed to fostering our multicultural community.
