Full job description About Tia Collection
Tia Collection is a global art collection with a mission to support artists and institutions through our acquisition and lending programs.
Seeking: An experienced candidate to fulfill the diverse duties of the Preparator position.
Responsibilities include daily hands-on management of the collection's inventory (currently over 4,500 works), while working directly on-site with the Curator, Registrar, Assistant Registrar, Collections Manager, Project Manager, Archivist and Media Manager and remotely with the Database Manager.
The successful candidate must be extremely organized, self-directed and attentive to detail, while working closely with the Registrar and Collections Manager. Must be able to balance multiple projects at once in a timely manner in our fast-paced work environment, while also processing large amounts of data, both in digital and paper formats. The Preparator must have excellent communication and organizational skills and ability to see projects through to completion; apply creative methods to solve installation problems with an attention to detail; and work well both as part of a team and under own direction.
Strong writing and research skills and corresponding inquisitive thought process necessary. The successful candidate will be able to interact confidently with all levels of museum directors, curators and registrars, galleries, artists and outside shipping companies and storage facilities.
Responsibilities: Assist with collection management and physical movement of all artwork, crates and strongboxes. Maintain onsite and offsite crate storage.Pull crates and strongboxes as necessary for shipments or order new, if necessary. Work with the Registrar and Assistant Registrar to ready artwork for condition reports prior to shipment for exhibitions and each time artwork arrives at storage. With the Assistant Registrar, pack artwork into crates for shipment and unpack when artwork is received. Able to construct boxes and other storage methods necessary for packing and storing art. Arrange and maintain incoming and outgoing domestic shipments of art from galleries, artists and museums, while working with US Art and other shipping companies to schedule pick up and deliveries. Update database with BOL and incoming crate dimensions. Work with the Curator on installation of artwork within Tia Collection storage space several times a year. Order office supplies and shipping materials as necessary. Maintain clean and organized areas for packing and shipping. Schedule monthly/yearly maintenance of the physical storage location, including alarm system, bug control, window washing, landscaping, and fire extinguishers. Education and Work Experience: Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university required, with course work in art, art history, museum studies or related field a plus. Three years of museum or gallery registration and/or collections management experience necessary. Knowledge of American art and a familiarity with artist's materials important. Knowledge of collections management practices and procedures including art handling, storage, tracking of objects and working with conservator and framers. Mac proficient. Experience with Adobe Suite and/or Argus a plus. Strong spreadsheet skills necessary. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, written and spoken. Ability to independently develop, implement and manage organizational procedures. Self-directed with an ability to prioritize and multi-task. Strong follow-up skills with meticulous and accurate attention to detail. Ability to work within a team environment and to accept guidance and constructive feedback. Ability to understand and maintain the highest levels of confidentiality. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record required. The successful candidates will be required to pass a routine background check. Physical Demands and Work Environment: Required to handle and inspect works of art, including paintings, photographs, and sculpture. Knowledge of art inspection procedures and language necessary. Pack and crate artwork for storage, loans and exhibitions. Ability to climb scaffolding and ladders. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Required to create written descriptions of inspected items. Job duties require prolonged standing and bending, as well as sitting and working at a desk for prolonged periods of time when working on the computer. Good hand/eye coordination is required, including the ability to inspect an object at close range. Position requires adept use of hands to safely handle and move collection objects according to the most current approved museum standards. Work is performed in a storage/office setting where the noise level is low to moderate and offsite at various museum settings. Job Type: Full-time, Mon.-Fri., 9am-5pm with an hour for lunch or comparable hours without lunch.
