Career Opportunities with German Marshall Fund of the United States
Based in Washington, D.C., the President reports to the Board of Trustees and has responsibility for the strategic, programmatic, financial, and management of the organization.
Specifically, the next President will lead GMF in the following ways:
Represent the organization's nonpartisan and transatlantic mission with integrity;Provide decisive organizational management and visionary leadership;Maintain an institutional culture of intellectual creativity;Strengthen cooperation and coordination among and between offices and issue areas;Command the attention of policymakers, the media, and the private sector through innovative research, programming, engagement with audiences;Collaborate with the Board of Trustees and staff to achieve shared purpose;Expand the organization's financial support by cultivating and stewarding public funding, private philanthropy, and endowment growth;Build upon GMF's legacy as a leading voice on defending democracy and the transatlantic partnership;Ensure that the organization is transparent, aligned with the stated mission, values, and vision, and led by dedicated, diverse, and creative staff.The next President of the German Marshall Fund will be an experienced leader who has a successful history of working with policymakers, the business community, subject matter experts, and elected officials from across the political spectrum.
The President will possess significant intellectual credentials, practical experience, and demonstrated management capability.
While no candidate will possess all of the key attributes, the following capacities and qualities will contribute to success in the role:
Management Experience: Strong candidates should have a leadership record overseeing a complex organization.
In particular, they should understand how to manage a variety of stakeholders.
The President will pay attention to organizational culture and morale and bring a demonstrated ability to recruit, motivate, and retain outstanding staff.
The next President will possess the ability to make timely decisions, understand the budgeting process, and function as a problem solver, who looks to build consensus to accomplish objectives.
Strategic Leadership: The next President should lead GMF with foresight and be able to confront current challenges and opportunities as well as anticipate those that may emerge over the next decade.
They will be open to innovative ideas and creative solutions during a period of political, economic, and social change.
Commitment to GMF's Historic Mission: The ideal candidate will make a sustained commitment to GMF to ensure there will be continuity in leadership and a lasting program of positive change while bringing stature, presence, and expertise to their work.
The next President will need to have a strong, well-informed grasp of transatlantic issues.
A working knowledge of multiple languages would be considered a plus.
Fundraising: A strong candidate will be comfortable raising public and private financial resources, as well as experience working with an advancement office.
The next President should have a history of working with donors and be adept at gift cultivation and stewardship as well as speaking about the value proposition of the organization.
Communications and Influence: Strong candidates will be able to convey a sense of authentic excitement and purpose about GMF's mission and will be effective as an internal and external communicator.
They will have curiosity about recent technology and emerging forms of media.
Emotional Intelligence: The next President must have a demonstrated track record of fostering an environment that encourages diversity of thought and appreciates global perspectives and sensitivities.
GMF's next leader should value a workplace culture where individuals bring their authentic selves and engage deeply in meaningful work and positive change.
Non-partisan: The reputation of any candidate must align with GMF's legacy as a nonpartisan, nonprofit, transatlantic organization.
