The pay rate range for this position starts at $29.22/hr and depends on qualifications. The work schedule for this position is M-F 8am-4:30pm. 
This position will oversee the activities in the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department's research and teaching labs. The individual in this position will be responsible for procurement, setup, and maintenance of equipment and materials needed to facilitate teaching and research activities with undergraduate students, graduate students, student clubs, research staff, and faculty.  Classification concept
Provides professional research and technical support for diagnostic and research projects, studies, and experimentation in support of the University's research agenda. This may involve participation in identification of lab resource needs and related cost estimates, serving as liaison to external stakeholders, and advising on measures to ensure quality control. Problems generally are logistical/coordination problems that can be reconciled through direct corrective actions. Works independently; receives minimal guidance. Likely to act as an informal resource for colleagues with less experience. Represents the level at which career may stabilize for many years or even until retirement. Major Job Duties (Regular, On-Going Tasks)
This position has responsibility for project planning, consultation, and completion as well as operation of equipment and apparatus.
Design, manufacture, and build devices (40%): Designs, lays out, and builds complex instruments and components. Assist in the supervision of other machinists and mechanics in the construction of various components. Performs all basic duties required of a senior laboratory machinist. Fabricates parts, assemblies, apparatus, and complex systems of equipment working from blueprints, sketches, or by consultation. Prepares design of complicated devices, apparatus, and instruments in consultation with research or teaching staff. Advises students & faculty on design and research efforts including senior design projects. Operates & programs computer controlled machining, waterjet, & 3D printing equipment.
Maintain and oversee departmental laboratories, including lab and field equipment (30%):
Coordinate laboratory activities and scheduling to optimize Departmental functions. Setup and dismantle laboratory equipment for teaching, research, and outreach. Purchase, setup, maintain, calibrate, repair, and inventory Departmental equipment. Gather quotes to review competitive pricing and quality for the purchase of new equipment. Coordinate with Facilities Management to maintain equipment function and meet required standards. Determine whether repair requires vendor support or internal support and coordinate the proper maintenance activity. Perform the duties of the Departmental Research Safety Officer (RSO) by providing personal protective equipment and training in the safe operation of tools and equipment. Maintain lab safety manuals, training records, and standard operating procedures. Process hazardous waste disposal in accordance with policy and regulations. Repairs a variety of laboratory, teaching, diagnostic, clinical, or research apparatus, instruments, or instrumentation by performing troubleshooting of the malfunction
Manage materials and consumables (10%):
Procure materials and consumables needed in the laboratories. Properly dispose of materials and consumable supplies after use. Coordinate delivery of goods and services for the department. Provide or coordinate shipping and receiving activities. Maintain laboratory cleanliness, laboratory organization, and organization of general-use tools.
Other departmental job duties (20%):
Assist with on-campus MIE outreach functions and events. Assist student chapter clubs with various events and competitions. Assist with field-based research activities. Teaches applied machining skills & machine theory to undergrad students. Serves as outreach liaison, conducting tours for prospective and accepted students & families.
Supervision: Incumbents may be assigned these responsibilities: mentor/coach or provide guidance; lead
project teams, committees and/or other collaborative efforts; interview applicants; assign, schedule, direct work, and/or evaluate the work of colleagues and/or co-workers. Incumbents may supervise student employees.
Required Qualifications High school graduation, vocational school, or formal apprenticeship in machine shop practices and methods Six years experience as a journey level machinist in a model shop or other extensive varied work experience in machine shops Must be able to lift 30 pounds on an occasional basis. Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and computer aided design. Ability to convey clear directions to students and faculty when doing laboratory activities. The ability to assess potential budget impacts of purchases and activities. Experience in welding, cutting and grinding of metals to fabricate various tools and equipment. Preferred Qualifications BA/BS in a STEM related field Work experience includes considerable specialization in the machining and building of engineering designs including complex instruments or prototypes Ability to comprehend and implement engineering principles.
