The Transformational Computing business within Northrop Grumman Mission Systems (NGMS) is a highly motivated, talented, and growing organization focused on advancing the science and engineering of superconducting electronic systems into new capabilities and products.
Transformational Computing is developing technologies to transform computing beyond Moore's Law by advancing development of computer architectures, processing and memory subsystems, and large-scale, high-performance computing systems.
The HPC team is seeking an experienced High-Performance Computer (HPC) system engineer to provide full systems lifecycle support for growing compute infrastructure.
The engineer will collaborate with other team members to focus on system build, support, sustainment, and growth activities.
As a member of this team, the engineer may apply knowledge and experience to support daily operation of compute; network and storage infrastructure; software and system configuration; and usage recommendations to enhance or increase end-user productivity.
The HPC Systems Engineer will:
Provide day to day support (technical/non-technical) & administration of HPC services, including user training, problem resolution, resources & priorities management.
Work in a small team dedicated to supporting and growing High Performance Computing clusters used by multiple teams with multiple levels of requirements.
Maintain smooth operation of multiple systems in different environments.
Provide configuration management support.
Monitor system health and resolve issues in a timely fashion.
Troubleshoot and document issues as they arise.
As part of a cross-functional systems team, mentor, and cross-train other team members.
Willingness to learn and understand state of the art concepts and technologies that are foundational to the transformational computing technical architectures.
Engage in systems thinking and demonstrate technical leadership.
This position will serve on-site in Annapolis Junction, MD.
Basic Qualifications for Principal HPC Systems Engineer:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a similar technical discipline with 5 years of related experience, or 3 years with a Master's Degree, or 0 years with a PhD.
- IAT Level I Certification Required
- Must be willing to work on site 100% of time.
- Limited travel to local Northrop Grumman facilities may be required.
- This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with poly clearance per business requirements.
- Experience and direct technical knowledge of the following:
Strong knowledge and experience with High Performance Computing concepts to include cluster architecture, parallel file systems, and high-speed InfiniBand interconnects.
Strong Linux (Red Hat/CentOS) proficiency
Demonstrated ability to provision and configure HPC environments and components to include job scheduling (Slurm), multi-user login environments, and cluster management software (Bright, OpenHPC, Warewulf, etc.)
Experience with systems monitoring tools such as Nagios.
Strong understanding and experience with systems automation tools (Ansible, Salt, Puppet)
Ability to analyze and optimize system performance in high performance computer networks.
Basic Qualifications for Senior Principal HPC Systems Engineer:
- Bachelor's Degree or higher in a STEM discipline (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a similar technical discipline with 9 years of related experience, or 7 years with a Master's Degree, or 4 years with a PhD.
- IAT Level I Certification Required
- Must be willing to work on site 100% of time.
- Limited travel to local Northrop Grumman facilities may be required.
- This position requires the applicant to be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI with poly clearance per business requirements.

Active TS/SCI with poly security clearance.
Good written and verbal communication, mentoring experience, and good interpersonal skills.
Prior experience working with clusters or supercomputers.
Hands-on experience HPC hardware diagnostic and repair
Experience with Software compilation process (compilers, GNU Make, CMake, etc.)
Experience working with information security teams to ensure cybersecurity compliance of multi-user systems.
Working knowledge of JSIG and STIG.
Experience with various MPI implementations, IntelMPI, OpenMPI, MPICH
Experience with InfiniBand and the InfiniBand protocol
Experience with Nvidia CUDA libraries and GPUs
Experience with global and parallel files systems, such as BeeGFS

Salary Range: $99,800 - $157,000
Salary Range 2: $123,800 - $194,500
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay.
Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives.
