Overview
The applicant must be a conscientious, self-motivated individual with the ability to think on their feet in a fast-paced environment. Have a strong understanding of ethics and boundaries; the ability to communicate and work in a team setting; have excellent writing, time management, strong computer, and organizational skills; have observation skills and be detail oriented.
Understanding of victim awareness, risk intervention strategies, and case planning practices; ability to maintain a professional rapport with local law-enforcement agencies and community partners. Prior Corrections, law-enforcement, or military experience preferred for the position of Probation and Parole Officer I or II at the St. Johnsbury Probation and Parole Office. The work will be performed in an office setting with field work required.
Schedule hours from 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday with the potential for weekend and evening hours. Travel for in-state/out of state training may occur.

Environmental Factors
Work is performed in a field office, correctional and community setting and includes frequent interaction with potentially dangerous correctional clients. High stress may be present, as is some danger of assault. Evening, weekend, and alternating shift duty required to provide necessary services and supervision. Field travel is necessary and incumbents may be required to provide private means of transportation. Work related court, community meeting, and Parole Board appearances may be anticipated.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree.
OR
Associate's degree AND one (1) year or more of experience in corrections, human services, military service, law enforcement or other related field.
OR
High School diploma or equivalent AND two (2) years or more of experience in corrections, human services, military service, law enforcement or other related field.
Note: Possession of a valid driver's license is required, and a criminal background check will be performed prior to hire. Certain convictions can be disqualifying.
Preferred Qualifications
A degree in social work, criminal justice, human services, psychology or a related discipline
Special Requirements
Candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re-employment (RIF) rights.
