The Work You Will Do:
This is a highly Professional Geologist I position located in the Division of Waste Management, Permitting & Compliance Assistance Program (PCAP), Solid Waste Program. The incumbent of this position will a ssists in the technical and hydrogeological reviews of permit applications and reports for active, non-delegated Class I landfills and other facilities co-located at these landfills, including Class III landfills, waste processing facilities, waste tire facilities, and construction and demolition debris disposal facilities. This also includes reviews at WTE facilities and associated WTE disposal and collocated facilities.

The Professional Geologist II participates in meetings with representatives from the regulated community and federal, state, and local governments, and develops reports as required by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection; and assists with other duties as required. The Professional Geologist II also works with managers to plan and prioritize activities and projects in line with DEP's strategic objectives and find integral solutions on a variety of solid waste management challenges. The Professional Geologist II coordinates with Division and District staff to facilitate statewide consistency and safeguard Florida's natural resources.

Pay:Annual Salary: $54,690.24 - $66,000.00 (Commensurate with experience)
Your Specific Responsibilities:
+ Assists the solid waste permitting group to ensure permitting time clocks are being satisfied. Provides status reports to the Supervisor. Prepares appropriate correspondence to include letters requesting additional information from applicants, local and state officials, local and state agencies, consultants and other in-house Department programs as required. Monitors and complies with permitting time clocks associated with these projects as required. Meets with applicant's consultants, local government officials, and responsible parties, in-house as well as in the field, to discuss technical design and regulatory requirements at permitted solid waste facilities.
+ Coordinates with appropriate District staff on these projects as needed. Drafts technical assistance documents and assists in drafting permits and letters of intended agency action for signature. Assists in updating the necessary Department databases with information associated with these permit applications. Assists in the review and processing of variances, alternate procedures and beneficial use requests, as needed.
+ Reviews technical reports, water quality reports, evaluation monitoring reports and contamination assessment reports as needed and makes recommendations to the supervisor. Provides technical assistance to District staff for solid waste enforcement cases regarding technical design and regulatory requirements.
+ Provides technical assistance to local governments, consultants and citizens concerning solid waste technologies and regulations governing solid waste facilities. Participates in public meetings, workshops and performs other related duties as required.
+ Performs other related duties as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
+ Knowledge of terminology, principles, and analytical techniques of physical and natural sciences including geology and hydrogeology.
+ Skills in the operation of personal computers and related software.
+ Ability to conduct solid waste management facility inspections.
+ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with Department staff, other agency staff and the public.
+ Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing.
Required Qualifications:
+ License as a Professional Geologist under Chapter 492, F.S.
+ Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in geology or other natural sciences; or any combination of post-secondary education or verifiable related experience, as described above, for a total of four years.
Other Job Related Requirements for this position:
+ Valid Driver License.

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP-422 (Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility).
