Details of the offer

The College of Natural and Mathematical Sciences at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is seeking part-time faculty to teach in the Biotechnology Master's degree program.  The Master's of Professional Studies in Biotechnology prepares professionals for management and leadership roles in the biotechnology industry through advanced instruction in the life sciences, plus coursework in business, regulatory affairs, leadership, management, and other essential skills.  We welcome applications to teach the following courses:
Cell and Gene Therapies : This course provides an overview of the dynamic and emerging field of cell and gene therapy.  Students will learn about all the new modalities, companies, techniques, and future approaches to treating serious diseases worldwide and what technical operating manufacturing groups do. Experimental Design : This course introduces the basic concepts which underlie the design of experiments. Statistically designed experimental programs which can help test many variables simultaneously are very efficient tools for developing empirical mathematical models which accurately describe physical and chemical processes. These techniques are readily applied to production plant, pilot plant and laboratory systems, and should be a part of every practicing life science professional's repertoire. At the end of this course, the student will be able to select an appropriate experimental design for the problem at hand, to set up, conduct and analyze the results of statistically designed experiments, and to understand the statistical basis for these techniques. Legal/Ethical Issues in the Science Professions : This course offers an overview of legal issues affecting biotechnology and other science-based industries and frames basic philosophical and ethical considerations regarding genetic data and manipulation. The course includes a discussion of intellectual property issues. Capstone Course : This seminar-style, capstone course is an in-depth exploration of emerging technologies, innovations, and new products that are noteworthy to the biotechnology industry. Each student will select an emerging technology within the biotechnology sector and prepare a research plan designed to bring that technology to commercial fruition. The objective of the course is to give the student insight into the process of translating scientific discovery into innovative products. Special Topics : This course explores a new topic every year that is relevant to the biotechnology industry.  Previous special topics include biotechnology in the age of a pandemic, fermentation, cell and gene therapy, and global regulatory affairs.  Other opportunities may arise to teach other courses in our program.  Please see our website and submit your application if interested in other teaching opportunities
Each class in the program is typically taught one day per week in the evening.  Preferred teaching modality is in-person at the UMBC location at The Universities at Shady Grove in Rockville, Maryland but online or hybrid is fine in most cases.
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, and includes regular university benefits.
Candidates must have a doctoral degree or equivalent in a field related to biotechnology or significant industry experience relevant to the class topic.  Teaching experience in the classroom and/or on-line is not required but preferred.
