General Statement of Duties

Professional public health nursing work of an advanced nature dealing with maintaining, improving and promoting the health of the school aged child. Position is assigned to the School Health Program performing any or all duties of the Public Health Nurse I (School Nurse), and is responsible for specialized program components requiring certain aptitude and skills. Work is performed with limited supervision, the employee being largely responsible for both the planning and execution of her/his assigned activity. Incumbent may provide instruction and a degree of technical supervision to school nurses. Works collaboratively with and reports to the School Health Nursing Supervisor.

This position is scheduled to work 10 months (during the school year).

Prefrence will be given to members of the UPSEU bargaining unit.

Qualifications

Graduation with a Baccalaureate degree from a University accredited by the National League for Nursing, and a Master's degree in nursing or an acceptable combination of training, education and experience in Public health Nursing consistent with the overall needs of the School Health Program.

For the individual without a Master's degree: Five (5) years of experience in public health nursing, three (3) of which should be in school health.

Licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut, CPR Certification required. Must possess a valid driver's license.

Examination: 100% Training & Experience Assessment

The examination to determine a candidate's eligibility for the position will be a Training and Experience Assessment. This type of examination requires that you completely fill out the application, adding pages for additional relevant information where needed, and attaching any documentation of certificates, degrees, other significant documents, etc. A candidate's eligibility to be interviewed will be based solely on material submitted at the time of application. ESSENTIAL FEATURES:

Performs any and all related work as required by PHN I (School Nurse). Provides guidance to the Public Health Nurse I (School Health). Assists with orientation of new staff and In-service Planning and Training. Partial responsibility for the evaluation of the quality of services provided. Serves as back-up supervisor in the absence of School Health Nursing Supervisor.

Assists with developing school nursing guidelines with input from staff, School Health Nursing Supervisor and School Medical Advisor. Assists in identification of children with special needs and development of appropriate Health Care Plans. Assists with field investigations and special research.

May serve as a representative of the School Health Program at formal meetings and programs.

Performs related work as required.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES :

Considerable knowledge and understanding of school nursing practice.

Considerable knowledge, understanding and awareness of Public Health and School health laws and regulations.

Ability to exercise leadership coupled with tolerance and understanding, appreciation and respect for the abilities of others and to act as resource person.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to plan, provide meaningful observations, evaluations and reports.

Ability to maintain a constructive relationship with staff, recognizing their needs and concerns.

Ability to accept and constructively utilize administrative direction and consultation.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT OPERATION :

Operates equipment necessary to deliver nursing care including sphygomanometer, glucometer, filling syringes, audio-visual equipment such as VCR, slide projector, audiometer and vision screening equipment.

REQUIRED PHYSICAL OPERATION :

Sitting at a desk, climbing stairs, standing at an assigned location and work continuously for extended periods of time; ingress and egress buildings; lifting equipment weighing up to 5 lb.; administer CPR.

All positions may be subject to an interview process. The Town reserves the right to limit the number of qualified candidates who will be invited to participate in the examination, or any part thereof.

All outside candidates will be required to undertake and successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes a substance abuse test that includes testing for THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), given at the Town's expense prior to employment if conditionally offered a part time, full time or safety sensitive position.The Town of Greenwich has implemented a policy of background investigations for all full and part time positions prior to hiring as part of the reference checking procedures for outside candidates. The investigation will only be conducted as the last step prior to an offer. Refusal to sign the release form will terminate the candidate's further consideration.

All new hires at the Board of Education will also be subject to a background check in compliance with CT Public Act 16-67.
