Full job description Do you want to expand upon your skills to help you prepare for a great Public Works career? Then apply today to be a Glencoe Public Works Trainee! Candidates interested in this job MUST submit a Village of Glencoe application available here:
Public Works Trainees learn skills needed to maintain streets, sidewalks, water and sewer systems, forestry and grounds, along with snow and ice removal during the winter months – with technical and safety training, you'll learn the skills needed to begin a career in Public Works!
Public Works Trainees work outdoors in all weather conditions to assist full-time Public Works staff with infrastructure maintenance, forestry and grounds keeping and responding to after-hours weather event emergencies as needed. The Public Works Trainee position is a temporary, at-will position, but is eligible for similar full-time benefits, including health, dental, vision insurance, enrollment in the Village's pension system and paid leaves of absence after 90 days. After completing a six-month trial period, successful candidates may be offered up to a one-year engagement with the potential for additional engagements dependent on need and work performance. Successful completion of the six-month trial period will be evaluated at a three-month check-in and a six-month performance review, or as needed. Public Works Trainees typically work approximately 40 hours per week, in addition to periodic overtime as needed. Although the Village cannot guarantee full-time employment after Trainees complete engagements, this position provides Trainees with the key advantage of having specialized Village experience when positions do become available.
The Public Works Department is a full-service department that integrates traditional operational services, infrastructure maintenance, facility maintenance, capital projects, and engineering services.
Besides learning technical skills, you'll receive training that may include some or all of the following; confined space entry, trench/shoring, work zone safety/flagger, first aid, wood chipper and chainsaw operations. After a successful twelve-month period, trainees may be given the opportunity to complete commercial driver's license (CDL) training (subject to a repayment agreement).
