The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Drinking Water and Groundwater Program is recruiting to fill a Public Water Supply Specialist position. Selected candidates will be brought in at a level relative to their experience. This position is based in a South-Central Region and will be headquartered at the Fitchburg Service Center. Travel is required throughout the assigned area, with some statewide travel may required for meetings.

Position Summary This position is responsible for implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act Program for small public water systems across several counties. The primary responsibilities of this role include performing inspections of water systems, evaluating and interpreting monitoring data, recording observations, taking enforcement measures when necessary, and promptly addressing emergencies related to drinking water. This position is assigned to a DNR region: Northeast Region (Green Bay or Wautoma). Travel is required throughout the assigned area and sometimes statewide.
The successful candidate will be able to work independently and with others using communication and technical skills in service to the public and with the assigned Public Water Systems. You'll work with departmental teams, the public, assigned public water systems, local officials, other state agencies, and the federal government to accomplish work plan goals.

Salary Information Starting pay for the Entry level position is between $30.00 to $32.00 per hour ($62,400.00 to $66,560.00 annually).
Starting pay for the Senior level position is between $32.00 to $35.00 per hour ($66,560.00 to $72,800.00 annually).


This position is not represented by a collective bargaining unit. Pay on appointment will follow the provisions of the State of Wisconsin Compensation Plan.


This position is included in Pay Schedule/Range 15/03 for the Senior level and 15/04 for the Entry Level. A 12-month probationary period may be required.

Qualifications Please make sure to address and describe EACH of the following qualifications applicable to your experience within your resume and/or letter of qualifications to be considered for this position: Required qualifications include ALL the following criteria:


Education, work experience, and/or specialized training in a science or health related field (such as geology, chemistry, biology, public health, conservation, environmental science, natural resources, freshwater science, or similar field).


Collecting data and interpreting results.


Communicating scientific information to audiences of varying technical backgrounds and understanding.



Preferred qualifications include:


Experience related to drinking water systems, including but not limited to drinking water samples, well drilling, pump installing, and water treatment.


Experience utilizing databases (such as SQL, .Net, Oracle) for querying, reports, evaluating data trends, etc.
Experience working with state and federal regulations
Experience with drinking water contamination issues/water quality standards.
Relevant experience in working with and/or volunteering in science or human health related organizations, such as non-profit organizations, nature centers, academic institutions, consulting firms, or local, state, or federal government agencies.
