Job Description General Summary The Certified Pulmonary Function Testing Technician is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients requiring diagnostic testing in an organized and systematic manner according to department policy and standards.
Principal Responsibilities and Tasks The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. These are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.
Performs pulmonary-function, lung-capacity, diffusion capacity, and blood-and-oxygen tests to gather data for use by physician in diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary disordersConfers with patient in treatment room to explain test proceduresExplains specified methods of breathing to patient and conducts pulmonary-function tests, such as helium dilution and pulmonary mechanics (flow of air rate in lungs), arterial blood gas analyses, and lung-capacity tests, such as vital capacity and maximum breathing capacity tests, using spirometer or other equipmentMeasures expired air, using various analyzersObserves and records readings on metering devices of analysis equipment, and conveys findings of tests and analyses to physician for interpretationMaintains patient charts and ensures information is filed/scanned accuratelyMaintains clinical equipment and notifies management of issues or concernsOperates equipment in a safe and competent mannerRestocks and prepares lab for the next day according to par levels. Notifies manager responsible for ordering supplies when appropriateFunctions as a collaborative team member; demonstrated commitment to group goals and teamwork Qualifications Education & Training: Must be licensed by the State of Maryland as a Respiratory Care Practitioner as required by law. Recognized by the NBRC as either a Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) is highly preferred. Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) or Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) with Pulmonary Function experience will be considered but will need to obtain CPFT or RPFT within 1 year of hire. Certification in BCLS required. Certification in ACLS preferred but not required.
Work Orientation & Experience: A minimum of one year PFT testing within the past three years is preferred. The incumbent may require up to one (1) month of orientation or mentorship to gain specific competency to perform the job.
Skills & Abilities: Visual acuity and auditory fine motor skills are required. Must have the ability to: a) convey effective verbal and written information; b) communicate effectively with other health team members and with patients and their family; c) respond to emergency situations appropriately; d) relate positively with and reassure patients; e) organize and manage time effectively setting appropriate priorities; f) make independent decisions consistent with current policies and procedures; g) communicate effectively, projecting a positive image of the organization in support of the Service Excellence expectations; h) adapt hours of availability to variable and changing needs of the care setting; i) maintain confidentiality and discretion with patients and with health information; j) utilize available equipment effectively and safely and to calibrate or adjust equipment as needed; k) utilize good decision-making skills; and l) facilitate conflict resolution.
