Radiation Physicist

Details of the offer

The Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Advanced Light Source Division (ALS) Division has an opening for a Radiation Physicist. This pivotal role involves conducting thorough radiological risk assessments and crafting protective measures to mitigate radiation exposure, alongside overseeing radiation safety protocols and collaborating closely with engineers on shielding design. This role will allow you to make a significant impact at the forefront of soft x-ray science. Joining our team means being part of a dynamic environment where you will have the chance to work with cutting-edge technology and contribute to groundbreaking research.
The Advanced Light Source is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility whose excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft x-ray, hard x-ray, and infrared regimes attract over 1,600 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. It is one of five Berkeley Lab user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these user facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences, among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science. The ALS has been a global leader in soft x-ray science for more than two decades and is currently undergoing a large-scale upgrade (ALS-U) that will endow the facility with state-of-the-art x-ray capabilities. It's an exciting time to join our growing team!
Level 3 Responsibilities include: Conduct, with minimal supervision, radiological risk assessment and design of protective measures to minimize radiation exposure to people and the environment.Execute radiation calculations and specify requirements for shielding of accelerators and beamlines.Organize and perform radiation measurement campaigns.Manage and provide oversight of operational radiation safety aspects.Work jointly with accelerator and beamline engineers in the design of equipment and shielding to minimize radiation damage.Participate in research and development activities in radiation physics in support of the ALS & LBL mission and publish results.Level 4 Responsibilities Include: Develop and direct activities within the ALS Radiation Safety program.Contribute to the design and development of all ALS Radiation Safety Systems, including radiation monitoring and personnel protection systems.Participate in reviews of incidents involving radiation-associated events, components, and procedures.Take a leading role in radiation-safety policy making at the ALS and in working groups across peer labs.Propose and lead research activities in the field of Radiation Physics.Participate in ALS Division and Lab-wide committees and working groups. What is Required: For Level 3: Master in Health/Radiation Physics or Nuclear Engineering or the equivalent work experience and 3 years of experience. For Level 4: PhD in Health/Radiation Physics or Nuclear Engineering or the equivalent work experience and 5 years of experience, including demonstrated experience with shielding design, or the equivalent combination of education and work experience.Demonstrated experience with Monte Carlo radiation generation and transport codes (e.g. FLUKA, MCNP, PHITS).In-depth knowledge of radiological hazard analysis and shielding design methods.Knowledge of applicable radiation protection regulations and requirements.Knowledge of theory and operation of radiation detectors.Demonstrated ability to work independently and within collaborations.Proven excellent organization and multi-tasking skills, and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.Demonstrated excellent initiative and ability to plan, anticipate, and identify needs, assess and resolve complex problems, and develop and coordinate plans to accomplish objectives.Advanced verbal and written communication skills.Desired Qualifications: Demonstrated experience at a particle-accelerator lab.Experience at a DOE national lab.Requested Application Materials: This position will remain open until filled.
The core values of the ALS reflect a strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We seek candidates who will support a culture in which each member of the community feels welcomed and valued. An ongoing commitment to recruiting and retaining a vibrant, diverse, and talented workforce is paramount to promoting a strong and successful lab community.
