Part-time employees typically work up to 19 hours a week, cannot work more than 28 hours a week, serve at will, and are exempt from the Civil Service System.

DEFINITION
Under supervision, the Receptionist focuses on providing visitors and callers with prompt and courteous customer service by managing the City Hall front desk and operating the City's phone switchboard; greeting customers on the phone and at the counter, providing information or directing customers to the appropriate department.
Performs routine office support functions, including word processing, filing, and performs related duties as assigned.
Essential Functions ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following functions are typical for this classification.
Incumbent may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address department needs and changing business practices.
Act as the City's main operator/receptionist and primary contact for City Hall visitors;
Provide visitors prompt and courteous customer service.
Operate the City's phone switchboard, evaluate the needs of the caller and either provide a satisfactory answer or direct the caller to the appropriate person or department;
Route emergency calls as necessary; take messages and provide extension numbers as needed.
Respond to routine inquiries, including City Hall hours of operation, City activities, names of City officials and management personnel, and various City organizations.
Notify the appropriate City Staff of any telephone system problems or outages.
Maintain the City's telephone directory, annual City Council Meeting Schedule, Invocation Schedule, miscellaneous certificates of insurance, and California Public Records Act Requests Log.
Establish positive working relationships with representatives of community organizations, State and local agencies and associations, City Management and Staff, and the public.
Provide assistance and/or instruction in the operation of City telephone equipment.
May be required to process incoming and/or outgoing mail, sort, weigh, classify and meter outgoing mail.
May perform a variety of routine clerical tasks such as indexing, coding, sorting, collating or stapling forms according to established procedures.
Provides assistance to the Chief Deputy City Clerk in preparation and distribution of City Council materials.
Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Any combination of education and/or experience that would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance.
Example combinations include: Graduation from high school or equivalent, including or supplemented by courses in typing and office practices.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Knowledge: Considerable knowledge of modern office practices, methods and equipment including computers, applicable software and phone systems.

Special Requirements/Physical, Mental, Environmental Conditions MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS: This position requires prolonged sitting and regular standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending squatting and stooping in the performance of daily activities.
Extensive and repetitive physical activity involving the arms, wrists, and hands, including writing and using a keyboard and mouse to operate a personal computer is required.
Acute hearing is required when providing phone and personal service.
It also requires physical abilities associated with the ability to read, write and communicate in a work environment.
Additionally, the need to lift, drag and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 20 pounds is required.

Part-time employees are paid an hourly rate based on hours worked and typically work 19 hours or less per week.
The City of Azusa does not pay into Social Security, so part-time employees are enrolled in the Accumulation Program for Part-Time and Limited-Service Employees (APPLE).
Part-time employees pay 3.75% of wages into this retirement program and the City matches the employee's (3.75% of wages) share.
Paid Sick Leave:
Effective July 1, 2015, part-time employees accrue sick leave beginning with the first full pay period of employment on the basis of 1 hour for every 30 hours worked.
The maximum accrual per year is 48 hours.
A waiting period of 90 days is required before an employee may be eligible to use paid sick leave.
Although paid sick leave can be carried over year to year, an employee can only accumulate up to a maximum of 48 hours and may use up to 24 hours in any one year.
This position is not covered by any other medical benefits.
Part-time employees are not considered to be part of the City of Azusa Merit and Civil Service System and are thus designated as non-classified employees.
Part-time employees are "at will" employees and, as such, may be terminated at any time without any right of appeal.
