Position Overview: The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. IHS aims to ensure comprehensive, culturally acceptable personal and public health services are available to American Indians and Alaska Natives, serving approximately 1.5 million individuals from over 557 federally recognized tribes in 34 states.
Role Summary: We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Internal Medicine/Family Practice in the outpatient department. The RN will provide professional nursing services, direct patient care, and care coordination for patients, working within the competency standards outlined by the Service Unit.
Key Responsibilities: -Provide a full range of emergency and comprehensive nursing care to patients of all ages and their families.
-Apply knowledge of nursing procedures to clinical practice, providing individualized, goal-oriented nursing care to adult patients.
-Use scientific and psychosocial nursing theory to plan and provide quality nursing care meeting the physical, spiritual, and social-cultural needs of Indian patients.
-Recognize complications and implement appropriate therapeutic interventions.
-Administer medications and recognize their effects, side effects, and complications.
-Provide immunizations and up-to-date patient education resources.
-Analyze medical procedure results and translate them into appropriate nursing interventions.
-Work effectively within healthcare teams and with Native American patients and their families.
-Facilitate inter-facility transports.
-Follow facility policies, TJC, OSHA, IHS, and other federal standards.
-Coordinate care teams and support team members.
-Provide health education to staff, patients, and customer owners.
-Perform clinical procedures including intravenous access, phlebotomy, laboratory testing, EKG, SVN respiratory treatments, and emergency code responses.
-Counsel and support patients and families, providing crisis intervention and facilitating referrals.
-Arrange specialty appointments and procedures for patients needing specialized care.
-Provide case management services and coordinate healthcare needs with multidisciplinary teams and various services.
-Offer specialized care coordination for high-risk, at-risk, and chronic condition patients, including problem-solving, medication reconciliation, and discharge instruction reviews.
-Ensure discharge follow-up appointments and instructions are carried out, developing care plans to promote self-care and improve health.
-Make patient unit assignments according to outpatient flow and ensure medication inventory and unit logs are completed timely.
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM (8-hour shifts totaling 40 hours per week).
One to two evening shifts per week from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Thirty minutes to one-hour lunch break as assigned for Internal Medicine or Family Practice Department.
Qualifications: Experience: Minimum of 36 months of nursing experience, with at least 12 months in the required specialty.
Licensure: Current, valid, unrestricted nursing license from a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications (or equivalent experience).
Education: Degree or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program.
Driver's License: Valid state driver's license if required by the position.
