Position Overview: The Indian Health Service (IHS), an agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, provides federal health services to American Indians and Alaska Natives. IHS aims to ensure comprehensive, culturally acceptable personal and public health services are available to American Indians and Alaska Natives, serving approximately 1.5 million individuals from over 557 federally recognized tribes in 34 states.
Role Summary: We are seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Specialty Clinic in the outpatient department. The RN will provide professional nursing services, direct patient care, and care coordination for patients with various health conditions, working within the competency standards outlined by the Service Unit.
Key Responsibilities: -Perform comprehensive nursing duties for patients with a variety of injuries and illnesses.
-Provide nursing care for patients of all ages with diverse health-related problems.
-Assess patient conditions, review health records, and determine required lab and screening data.
-Prepare patients for tests, exams, treatments, and procedures.
-Administer prescribed medications via various routes (oral, hypodermic, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous).
-Triage and provide emergency treatment based on patient status.
-Document observations, nursing interventions, and therapeutic measures in health records.
-Coordinate health care needs, making referrals to other specialty clinics and community resources.
-Set up and operate specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, defibrillators, EKG machines, and more.
-Work independently with consultation available from a nurse supervisor when assigned to a field clinic.
-Provide guidance and orientation to ancillary nursing staff and other personnel.
-Facilitate inter-facility patient transports.
-Counsel and educate at-risk or high-risk patients and families, documenting education activities in the Electronic Health Record (EHR).
-Coordinate patient care, including arranging appointments for outside specialist referrals and following up on outside referrals.
-Place radiology and lab requests in the EHR and address critical lab values.
-Review, reschedule, and recall patients who did not keep their appointments.
-Perform clinical procedures including intravenous access, phlebotomy, medication administration, EKG, SVN respiratory treatments, and emergency code responses.
-Follow specialty clinic and outpatient department policies and procedures, as well as federal licensing and accreditation standards.
-Interact professionally with patients and co-workers.
-Provide appropriate guidance to specialty clinic staff, assigning daily tasks and solving scheduling issues.
-Serve as the specialty clinic nurse for contract providers, assisting with various specialty clinics (e.g., Audiology, Breast Clinic, Dermatology, Cardiology, Orthopedic, etc.) -Assist with orientation of new staff, ensure adequate staffing for each specialty clinic, and maintain the clinic schedule.
-Serve as a liaison for specialty clinic referrals and coordinate patient scheduling.
-Monitor and report the status and progress of work assigned, ensuring compliance with supervisor instructions.
Work Schedule: Shifts may include 12-hour, 10-hour, or 8-hour tours of duty, with evening shifts as needed.
One-hour lunch break during the day shift.
Qualifications: Experience: Minimum of 36 months of nursing experience, with at least 12 months in a specialty area.
Licensure: Current, valid, unrestricted nursing license from a state, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a U.S. territory.
Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certifications.
Education: Degree or diploma from an accredited professional nursing program.
Driver's License: Valid state driver's license if required by the position.
