Position Summary

A registered veterinary technician directly handles inpatient and outpatient care, working hand-in-hand with veterinarians.
The technician assists in exam rooms by taking patients' history, vital signs and weight; preparing vaccines; collecting samples and running diagnostic tests; providing client education; and assisting with animal restraint.
Technicians also may see their own appointments for procedures such as suture removal, nail trim, vaccine administration when a doctor exam is not required, long-term medication monitoring testing, surgery admission and discharge and boarding check-in exams.
Technicians directly impact doctors' productivity, client service and patient care.
Technicians play a key role in communicating with clients in person and by phone for follow-up care and patient monitoring.

Job Responsibilities Technical Duties Assist veterinarians in the practice of veterinary medicine and surgeryPerform in-hospital lab testing and prepare specimens for outside labsAssist veterinarians in outpatient exams by taking histories, vital signs and weights as well as providing client educationProvide nursing care for in-hospital patientsConduct pre-admission exams and discharge hospitalized patientsPerform client callbacksMaintain legally defensible medical records in cooperation with veterinarians Exams Prepare and maintain exam rooms (cleanliness and stocking of supplies and brochures)Assist veterinarians in exam rooms by taking patients' history, vital signs and weight; preparing vaccines and medications; and assisting with medical recordsEducate clients on prevention and wellness topicsFill prescriptions per veterinarians' instructionsEducate clients about medication instructions and administrationPerform admission exams for patients being hospitalized, including weight, vital signs and pre-surgical examPerform pre-anesthetic exams on surgery and dental patients if the veterinarian has not already assessed patientsDischarge surgery patients with detailed instructions. Lab Responsible for collecting samples for in-hospital lab testing such as intestinal parasite screens, pre-anesthetic testing, senior screens, complete blood count, urinalysis, heartworm, tick-borne diseases, Feline Leukemia, FIV, cytology, etc.Collect and prepare samplesReport diagnostic testing results to veterinariansAssist in quality controls and record keeping on in-house lab equipmentComplete proper sample preparation and paperwork for outside diagnostic lab tests Treatment Perform treatments noted on treatment sheets (hospitalized patients, surgeries)Assist veterinarians with daily treatmentsProvide nursing careTake and process x-raysRecord x-rays in log and medical recordsUse and maintain IV pumps Surgery Admit patients scheduled for surgery and dentistryKeep surgical materials stockedPrepare gown and surgical packsCheck oxygen lines and waste gas scavenger system; turn off scavenger system after surgical procedures are completedPrepare surgery suite for surgeryPrepare instruments; know type of surgical instruments required for specific surgeriesAssist veterinarians with patient restraintAssist veterinarians with induction/intubation or perform induction/intubationSurgical preparation of patientMonitor anesthesia closely with monitoring equipment such as pulse oximeter, electrocardiogram, and blood pressureHelp maintain anesthesia machineAssist veterinarian performing surgeryMonitor patients waking up from anesthesia; assist with treatment if patient has reaction to anesthesiaClean surgery suite and surgical instruments after each procedure following hospital sterilization protocolsKeep accurate anesthesia/surgical medical recordsEnsure hospital patients go home well groomed and in an appropriate medical state Dentistry Clean, scale and polish teeth using dental equipment and hand instrumentsPerform fluoride treatmentsRecord dental problems in medical records and report them to veterinarians for instructionsAssist veterinarians performing oral extractions or other dental proceduresTake before-and-after digital photos for client handoutsTake and process dental x-rays Medical Records Update medical records with progress notesCommunicate with doctors and technicians through notations in medical recordsRecord information for hospitalized patients including:Daily status each time a technician touches a patient, with initials, time, procedures and observationsHospitalized procedures such as surgeries, radiographs and dentistryPre-surgical exam findings, anesthesia riskTime anesthesia begins, ends and how many minutesLab test resultsDental chartsInjections, medications, fluid therapy, pain managementNote homecare instructions given to and reviewed with clientCreate estimates/treatment plansCollect signatures on consent forms and estimates/treatment plans Housekeeping Duties Maintain cleanliness of surgery suite, treatment area and exams rooms for all surfaces, including lights, tables, cabinets, walls and floorsMaintain equipment cleanliness and longevity by vacuuming pet hair from keyboards, wheels and equipmentVacuum computer keyboards in treatment area, lab/pharmacy and exam roomsClean glass windows and doors in surgery suite, treatment area and exam roomsSweep and mop floors in surgery suite, exam rooms and treatment areaKeep food and drinks out of treatment area and surgery suiteDiscard syringes in proper containersEmpty trashClean water and food bowls for hospitalized petsClean cages and bedding for hospitalized petsOrganize radiology gowns, gloves and badges, making sure they are neatly hung or storedScrub and polish sinksWipe down walls and baseboards in the surgery suite, treatment area and exam roomsClean cagesDo laundry Administrative Duties Inventory Log controlled drugsAssist with inventory physical count /reconciling the control logUnpack deliveries, reconcile against packing slip and restock suppliesRestock shelves and drawers in exam rooms and treatment area Safety Follow OSHA requirementsFollow practice's health and safety protocolsMaintain Safety Data Sheets (SDS) Administrative Be proficient in using our veterinary practice-management softwareFile lab resultsDelegate and oversee tasks to the veterinary assistant.Assist receptionists when they need extra helpAttend staff and department meetings Benefits VWP is proud to offer competitive benefits!Group Health Insurance401kPaid Time OffPaid Mental Health DayPersonal Pet discountsContinuing educationUniformsConvenient Boarding Facility adjacent to Orrville Veterinary Clinic, including Doggy Daycare and Boarding discountsPrivately Owned Multi-Location Practice
