Reporter, Sanitation and ParksThe WNYC and Gothamist newsroom is looking for a dynamic, enterprising reporter to cover New York City's sanitation and parks departments – two agencies that New Yorkers interact with daily that can greatly affect quality of life.This reporter will be part of the NYC Accountability team, which covers our city's agencies under the newsroom mission toMake New York work for New Yorkers. A successful candidate will know how to speak with and listen to agency officials and employees, residents and our readers to deliver sharp, fair and informative news on trash, recycling and compost collection, public spaces and pests. This reporter's beat will also include covering the city's aging public infrastructure, such as sewers and street space.The reporter will be tasked with balancing daily news assignments with longer term enterprise and investigations that uncover ways everyday New Yorkers are underserved by the city's built environment. This is a beat that requires curiosity, creativity and strong field reporting skills.A strong candidate for this role will have demonstrated experience managing a beat, with a track record of covering breaking news and executing exclusive reporting that holds public officials to account.The role will deliver content for both our digital audience on Gothamist and our broadcast listeners on WNYC. The capability to simultaneously work on both written reporting and audio scripts is essential.A successful candidate will have experience collaborating as a part of a large newsroom, and be a self-starter who aggressively identifies story ideas and reporting plans.ResponsibilitiesPitch, report and produce stories on New York City's open spaces and infrastructure, with a particular emphasis on sanitation, parks and streetsCreate engaging journalism that attracts loyal and diverse audiences in digital, on-air, on-demand audio and socialDeliver exclusive stories and scoops that our audience can't find anywhere elseHold all content to the highest journalistic standards -- from breaking news to longform featuresExecute a regular stream of digital stories, broadcast content and audio featuresCollaborate with other members of the newsroom on reporting that's relevant to New Yorkers' lived experiencesConsistently meet daily publishing deadlinesWork in-person at NY Public Radio's newsroom and be available to be deployed to report in the field whenever necessaryJump on breaking news coverage, including some stories that aren't specific to the parks and sanitation beatCoordinate with other editors, radio producers and our audience team to maximize our reach across all our platformsQualificationsMinimum of 5 years professional journalism experienceExperience as a beat reporter at a major news organizationExperience covering breaking news and developing storiesFamiliarity with New York City and state government operationsAbility to deliver clean, accurate written copy and radio scriptsAbility to take photographs as part of coverage where necessary, and experience collaborating with audience teams on social media outputDeft writing, including knowledge of AP style and strong grammar skillsAbility to manage several products on multiple platforms concurrentlyA deep commitment to accurate, ethical journalismDemonstrated knowledge of complex social and cultural issuesDemonstrated commitment and ability to contribute an equity lens to every aspect of people development and management processes, and ability to increase diversity, equity, and inclusion competency in newsroomsExcellent communication skills, including those for public speakingExperience using content management systems and other databases required to edit and produce text and audio storiesSelf-starter with proven ability to meet deadlines and pay close attention to detail and fact-checkingThe ability to work effectively with the public and colleagues at New York Public RadioAdditional InformationThis is a full-time role exempt role with a salary range of $84,413-$86,000per year (plus a full benefits package). Salary offered within this range is determined by skills, experience and organizational pay equity.
