ARS Office/Lab and Location: A research opportunity is available with the National Laboratory for Agriculture and The Environment (NLAE) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Agricultural Research Service (ARS) located in Ames, Iowa.
The Agricultural Research Service (ARS) is the U.S. Department of Agriculture's chief scientific in-house research agency with a mission to find solutions to agricultural problems that affect Americans every day from field to table. The NLAE is a transdisciplinary lab whose mission is to generate information addressing critical problems in agriculture and watershed management to develop innovative solutions which increase the efficiency of agriculture systems and reduce environmental risk. Research Project: A research internship is available in the Emmett and Chaterjee labs studying carbon and nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas emissions from agricultural soils. In collaboration with the mentors, the participant will assist in field and lab experiments investigating agroecosystem management influence on soil C and N fluxes, plant-soil interactions and nitrous oxide emissions from soil. Learning Objectives: Participants will learn field and lab methods of soil science, soil microbiology and soil gas flux. In addition to the team research project, the participants will have the opportunity to interact with an interdisciplinary team of scientists at NLAE spanning fields of hydrology, agronomy, soil science and micro-meteorology. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors. Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for 3 months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of ARS and is contingent on the availability of funds. Level of Participation: The appointment is full time. Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens only. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and ARS. Participants do not become employees of USDA, ARS, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Qualifications The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor's degree in the one of the relevant fields (e.g. agronomy, environmental science or microbiology). Degree must have been received with the last 2 years or currently pursuing.
