Position Summary
Under the directions of the Executive Director of Cardiovascular Services and the Medical Director of Cardiac Surgical Services, the nurse practitioner functions as a member of the multidisciplinary cardiovascular services team using standardize protocols to independently provide examination, evaluation, and recommendation for treatment of patients.
Responsibilities include daily rounding and care of patients through performance of clinical duties including but not limited to, consultations, ordering of diagnostic tests, prescribing of pharmacological and non-pharmacological therapies, development of treatment plans to facilitate the continuum of care from admissions to discharge.
The nurse practitioner must effectively communicate and document data relevant to the care of the patients.
The nurse practitioner collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure safe and effective patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcome.
In addition, the nurse practitioner, using evidenced based guidelines, assists with the development of clinical programs that enhance the delivery of services.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities of the Job
•Demonstrates advanced knowledge and skill in diagnosis, management, and evaluation of actual or potential needs of patients and families with cardiovascular disease.
•Participates in reviewing reports on STS data registries.
•Case manages Cardiac Surgery and Valve Disease patients in collaboration with Cardiac Nurse navigators to maintain quality and cost controls.
•Directs staff members in gaining and retaining clinical knowledge and skills.
•Serves as a resource person to facilitate clinical problem-solving and decision-making skills of clinical staff caring for patients having Cardiac Surgery and/or Valve Disease.
•Functions as a change agent to improve patient care.
•Assist management with the attainment of organizational goals.
•Demonstrates knowledge of current research and literature
•Conducts audit functions of various types both documentation and observational, analyze and present data.
•Consistently applies infection control policies / procedure.
•Meets population specific competencies.
•Attends department specific education / training, in-service, staff meetings.
•Participates in department specific performance improvement projects.
•Provides input to improve departmental operations, equipment, and supply needs.
•Demonstrates a positive influence and recognizes the efforts of others.
•Coordinates care, treatment, imaging, diagnostic and surgical interventions for cardiovascular and interventional radiology patients
•Coordinates and/or monitors compliance to cardiovascular core measures (i.e., AMI, HF)
•Acts as a resource for the education of staff and cardiovascular patients and families.
•Maintains statistics and authors reports as required.
•Develops and oversees new clinical programs (to include, but not limited to, Open-Heart Surgical Programs).
*Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications.

Qualifications Minimum Requirements Qualifications/Work Experience:
•Three to five years' experience as a Registered Nurse in critical care or cardiovascular nursing experience
•Minimum of two years' experience in similar nurse practitioner / coordinator role
•Must have experience working as a Cardiac Surgery NP
•CCRN-American Association of Critical Care Nurse preferred.
•National certification in a nurse practitioner specialty preferred.
•Experience in quality improvement theory, change theory, adult learning principles, and team building
•Knowledgeable of current research and strength in translating research into everyday practice
•Effective problem-solving skills
•Ability to relate to a variety of professionals in the Intensive Care Unit setting
•Good interpersonal and communication skills
Education/Licensure/Certification:
•Possession of a valid California License as a Registered Nurse
•Certification by the State of California, board of Registered Nursing as a Nurse Practitioner
•Certification by a National Organization/Association as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner or as an Adult Nurse Practitioner
•Current certification from the American Heart Association in Basic (BCLS) and Advanced (ACLS) Cardiac Life Support.
