Job DescriptionThe Safety Inspector provides asbestos and lead programs support to Network Infrastructure & Services (NI&S), part of Virginia Tech's Division of Information Technology. In this capacity, the incumbent:• Maintains the Asbestos Inspector and Lead Inspector designations to support sampling, reporting, and use of assigned equipment.• Review work orders and surveys for proposed cable paths, check building plans, and review hazardous material sampling data.• Collects samples of building materials in suspected areas, as necessary, and submits samples for testing. Interprets results of testing and communicates to affected parties. Enters results into the asbestos database.• Inspects and assesses existing infrastructure and recommends what work is needed to meet codes, standards, and safety regulations.• Prepares written reports to document findings and makes recommendations to field crews.Reporting to the Occupational Safety Program Manager in the Department of Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), the Safety Inspector also:• Provides support to field crews throughout projects, as necessary, to promote a safe and healthy workplace and compliance with EHS programs.• Performs comprehensive audits and inspections for compliance with over 20 different EHS programs and OSHA regulations, including those that are highly complex and where extensive knowledge of regulatory requirements is necessary.• Interviews, observes, and investigates workplaces for hazard identification, evaluation of risk, and recommendations on engineering and administrative controls and personal protective equipment.• Documents findings and effectively communicates corrective and preventative measures to various levels of the campus community in a timely manner.• Acts as subject matter expert to the campus community.• Makes recommendations to the EHS Program Manager regarding changes in programmatic processes or procedures based on application in a diverse living/learning/working environment.• Performs routine accident investigations and reviews.In addition, the incumbent performs other duties as requested by the supervisor, takes initiative to support the best interests of the department and a healthy work environment, strives to fulfill the terms in the Standards of Business Conduct, Virginia Tech's Principles of Community, and supports the university's motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).Required Qualifications• Bachelor's degree in safety engineering, safety-related field, OR equivalent combination of training, experience, and certifications.• Working knowledge of the technical principles, procedures, and techniques used to achieve compliance with OSHA safety-related regulations in assigned program areas.• Demonstrated experience inspecting for compliance with OSHA regulations and implementing safety and health programs.• Ability to effectively work both independently and as a team member.• Strong interpersonal, analytical, problem-solving, and written and oral communication skills.• Demonstrated experience preparing technical reports and professional correspondence.• Proficiency with Microsoft Office software.Preferred Qualifications• Associate or Certified Safety Professional.• Asbestos Inspector.• Lead Inspector.• Experience working in a higher education and/or research environment.Pay Band4Appointment TypeRegularSalary InformationCommensurate with Education and ExperienceReview Date2/21/2024Additional InformationThe successful candidate will be required to have a criminal conviction check.About Virginia TechDedicated to its motto,Ut Prosim(That I May Serve), Virginia Tech pushes the boundaries of knowledge by taking a hands-on, transdisciplinary approach to preparing scholars to be leaders and problem-solvers.
