General Description
Provides professional educational and psychological services to students to include classroom interventions, student assessments and placement recommendations, individual and group counseling, consultation services to staff and parents and crisis intervention. Complex work is performed within specific program objectives and policies; the employee communicates with teachers and other school personnel to plan work and coordinates with others to ensure service effectiveness. Contacts are made regularly and frequently with instructional and administrative personnel, as well as community resource personnel. Essential Job Functions Provides academic and behavioral intervention services for students in collaboration with classroom teachers.
Prepares clearly written, comprehensive psychological reports which address the referral concerns and provide practical recommendations that can be realistically implemented by school personnel and used to assist in the development of the Individual Educational Plan (IEP);
Consults and assists teachers to determine and implement appropriate academic and behavioral interventions in classrooms.
Performs psycho-educational assessments of students, observations, data collection, interpretation and analysis.
Participates in child study and eligibility meetings of students to diagnose and prescribe student interventions.
Consults and collaborates with parents, teachers, students and administrators.
Maintains accurate and careful records of all psychological services provided;
Follows federal, state, and local laws, regulations and policies regarding children's educational welfare; and serves as an advocate for students and parents;
Works with the crisis management team in the schools, including reactions to illness, deaths and abuse.
Provides individual and group counseling services.
Develops and coordinates various psychological services available to students and staff. Provides training to staff and parents.
Assists with the coordination of child study meetings.
Serves as a liaison between home, school and community. Coordinates community resources to address child and family needs.
Provides written evaluations as required by state, federal and local guidelines.
Demonstrates commitment to improving professional competence.
Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications
Considerable knowledge of the concepts, principles and methodologies of school psychology including: psycho-educational evaluations using educational, intelligence, personality, psycho-motor function, behavioral and personality instruments; of child growth and development and of learning, measurement, research, statistics and intervention and prevention strategies.
Considerable knowledge of learning theories and cognitive psychology. Considerable knowledge of federal and state regulations and guidelines related to special education and pupil personnel services programs. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Demonstrated ability in individual and group decision making, problem analysis and conflict resolution and the ability to collaborate with other therapeutic and instructional personnel. Requirements
Eligibility for a Pupil Personnel Services or Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement in School Psychology. Completion of an approved program in school psychology to include at least 60 graduate hours that culminate in at least a master's degree or hold a certificate issued by the National school Psychology Certification Board. Valid VA Driver's License. This position requires the incumbent to drive. In accordance with Policy 5431, an employee who occupies the position and is assigned a district-owned or leased motor vehicle will be subject to annual driving checks and must maintain acceptable records pursuant to the standards set forth in the policy. Preferred: Bilingual in Spanish/English. Minimum of 18 years of age. Possession of a Master's degree from an approved and accredited program in school psychology or hold a certificate issued by the National School Psychology Certification Board. Current license or eligibility for a Virginia Postgraduate Professional License as a school psychologist.
