As a Scientific Glassblower on our Pressure Calibration team, you will be building fused quartz bourdon tube (QBT) pressure sensors. These sensors are some of the most unique and precise digital pressure sensors in pressure calibration and require a large attention to detail to manufacture.
Responsibilities:
Constructs mechanical units, and glass parts / components to make subassemblies, assemblies or complete units using glass torches, hand tools, jigs, fixtures, and miscellaneous equipment
Builds, fits, aligns, adjusts parts to meet tolerances and product operating requirements; repairs units or products that have failed to meet the requirement
Work from drawings, method sheet diagrams, or other specification in accordance with established assembly procedures, processes, and standard work.
Expected to participate in continuous improvement processes
Basic Qualifications:
Safely operate standard and specialized glassblowing tools and equipment to fabricate and repair glass systems
Specialized tools include: mini hand torches, custom fixtures, glassblowing/CNC lathes, electrical components/solder, test devices, pressure systems, vacuum systems, sand blasting machines, grinding and polishing, annealing ovens, precision measurement equipment, hydrofluoric acid
Accurately follow work instructions as well as interpret technical drawings and manuals
Adjust focus, work under magnification, identify and distinguish between colors, and judge distance/spatial relationships by eye as well as verify by precision measurement equipment
Join and seal subassemblies to assemble finished product, using gas torch, hand tools, and solder
Maintain a high level of quality control- examine products for flaws and variations according to standards
Keep clear data records of build specifications, test results and daily performance
Monitor project work and meet deadlines
Maintain/communicate inventory to buyer planners
Work as a team member and foster a cooperative team environment

Experience with long, intricate, precise builds with many failure points that require proficient hand/eye coordination and manual dexterity at fine scales .1mm – 2mm and extremely tight tolerances (<.003")
Experience drawing, sealing, blowing, winding, cutting, and hydrofluoric acid etching quartz rod and tubing
Effectively communicate with engineers to troubleshoot, review/improve processes, design and fabricate glass fixtures/apparatus
Experience working with (CNC) glass lathes to wind coils and draw tubing
Ability to work with Pyrex and various exotic glasses
Train others in the use of various glass-working equipment
Experience with State and federal regulations concerning environmental, health, and safety pertaining to hazardous material usage and exposure
