Scientist and Geobiotechnology Program LeadSalary range: USD 115,000 - 140,000 per year
Role SummaryThe Scientist and Geobiotechnology Program Lead will drive Homeworld's geobiotechnology program through engagement of the technical community. During the first ~16 months of their work, they will identify high-leverage problems in geobiotechnology and then translate their technical findings into actionable public knowledge, targeted community-building, and funding for solutions. Later, they will work with the team to determine next steps, which could include new efforts around a specific opportunity in geobiotechnology or shifting to another science program.
We're looking for a leader who is both technically-exceptional and community-minded. Our ideal fit is someone who is eager to dive into technical literature and formulate hypotheses, and is also excited to communicate publicly and understand the practitioner needs you can only learn through direct conversation or convening. Since geobiotechnology requires new foundational research, a successful candidate will be comfortable connecting first-principles science to the constraints of applied technologies.
This role is best for someone with a mindset of growing with an early-stage organization. As part of a small, dynamic team, the Scientist and Geobiotechnology Program Lead's role will be flexible and evolve based on their strengths and interests. Their creative work will drive their next steps.
ResponsibilitiesDevelop and articulate strategic theses on the opportunities for geobiotechnology in sustainability and identify key technical challenges in the field.Populate the Homeworld Problem Statement Repository by drafting actionable problem statements and facilitating community contributions.Organize and lead technical components of events like workshops and meetups.Create compelling content, such as blog posts or technical articles, to share knowledge and insights about geobiotechnology.Support practitioners by providing guidance and connections.Support recruitment and review of proposals to Homeworld's funding program.Scope and manage contractor work.Develop hypotheses for impactful research projects that Homeworld could nucleate externally or incubate internally.QualificationsPhD or equivalent training in a relevant field.Expertise in the technical foundations of geobiology and geobiotechnology.Exceptional ability to orient quickly in new technical domains, identify frontiers, and synthesize knowledge across technical fields.Strong interpersonal skills and successful collaborative achievements.BonusExperience with the applications of geobiotechnology.Experience developing first-of-kind technologies.Experience with community work.Experience managing small teams.Compensation + Additional InformationHomeworld offers a competitive salary and benefits package including flexible PTO, sick time, holidays, generous health insurance coverage (medical/vision/dental), and 401(k) with 5% employer match. The salary range for this position is $115,000-$140,000 depending on experience.
Reporting StructureThe Scientist and Geobiotechnology Program Lead will report to the Science Director.
LocationThis is a full-time, fully remote position, with ~10 travel days per year. It is preferred that the candidate has at least 4 hours overlap with both PST and EST time zones in a standard 9am-5pm working day.
