The Environmental Protection Network (EPN) is composed of more than 600 EPA alumni from across the country who volunteer their time to protect the integrity of EPA and its mission. EPN is dedicated to serving as a trusted resource and answering calls for objective analysis, scientific rigor, and facts about the environment and EPA.
EPN is currently focused on building and defending the capacity of environmental agencies and the communities they serve to truly address the most urgent health and environmental crises.
Ensure that EPA advances policies, budgets, and institutional changes to address climate and environmental injustices, as well as other pressing public health needs.Provide pro bono capacity-building technical assistance and training to environmental justice communities, NGOs, and under-resourced state/local/tribal government agencies.Train and mentor EPA staff and managers and recruit individuals from underrepresented populations to work at EPA.Educate Congress and serve as a critical resource for facts, objective analysis, and scientific rigor for reporters and NGOs.The Senior Director of Policy will be a member of the executive leadership team and lead all aspects of Policy related work at EPN. They will supervise a team that includes the Manager of Public Affairs, Associate of Communications, Director of Policy, Senior Associate of Policy, Senior Associate, Press Officer, and two contracted policy advisors. The hiree will report to EPN Executive Director, Michelle Roos. Michelle is located in New York City. Work will be remotely located as EPN does not have an office. There will be some in-person meetings in other locations in the United States, and the expectation is that this person could travel to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. at least once a month.
Responsibilities include:
Strategic Leadership + VisionDrives a comprehensive national policy strategy.Develops, leads, and manages annual planning, goal setting, and the budget process for the policy and public affairs team.Serves as a member of the executive leadership team to advance the mission of EPN.Team ManagementManages policy and public affairs teams.Supports and drives employee performance management and development.Fosters cross-functional working group collaborations.External Partnerships/Stakeholder EngagementWorks with volunteers, consultants, and partners to achieve EPN policy goals.Manages government relations including working with Congress.Acts as a liaison to EPA.Drive SAVE EPA CampaignDevelops and drives strategy for the SAVE EPA campaign.Manages public affairs team, including senior press officer, to coordinate SAVE EPA communications.Manages policy team, including policy advisors, to coordinate SAVE EPA partnerships (including tables) and national policy strategy.Partners with the Technical Assistance team, including Kathy Pope and Michelle Roos, to incorporate elements of safeguarding federal funding into the SAVE EPA campaign.What is the SAVE EPA Campaign? This is EPN's work to fight to protect EPA and the communities EPA serves from rollbacks, budget cuts, and other expected attacks that threaten public health and the environment.
QUALIFICATIONS: At least 6-8+ years of relevant work experience in policy, advocacy, or congressional outreach.Interest and experience in US environmental and health policy, and the work of EPA and other federal agencies.Bachelor's or Master's degree or equivalent related work experience required.Minimum of 3 years in a leadership role, managing teams.Ability to work independently, work on many different projects, and switch effectively from one task to another.Strong written and verbal communication skills.Detail-oriented and unafraid to ask questions.Proficiency with Google Docs and Spreadsheets.Experience with CRM database management.Exceptional people management skills, with the ability to foster a collaborative and inclusive team environment.A strategic and systems-thinking approach.Experience overseeing contracted services.Preference for D.C. or D.C. adjacent-based location.CORE COMPETENCIES: Communicating Effectively: The Senior Policy Director must have exceptional communication skills to clearly and persuasively convey complex policy issues to diverse stakeholders, including executives, government officials, and the public.Building Relationships & Networks: The Senior Policy Director must excel at building and maintaining strategic relationships with key stakeholders, including government officials, industry leaders, and advocacy groups.Managing Execution: The Senior Policy Director must be skilled at driving the successful implementation of policy initiatives, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and timely delivery.Making Decisions & Demonstrating Judgement: The Senior Policy Director must exercise sound judgment in making complex, high-impact decisions, balancing short-term needs with long-term strategic goals.Team Management: The Senior Policy Director must be an effective leader, capable of managing and developing a high-performing team.PAY: An annual salary of $160,980 based in D.C.
