Position Overview
The Bureau of Justice Assistance seeks an experienced Senior Paralegal Specialist IV for the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Program. This senior-level position requires extensive benefits/claims expertise and supports the processing of critical benefits for public safety officers and their families.
Required Qualifications
Education:
Paralegal Certificate OR
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution (legal emphasis preferred)
Experience:
Six (6) or more years of paralegal experience
At least three years must be specifically in benefits/claims processing
Demonstrated expertise in federal benefits administration preferred

Annual Program Volume
Position supports processing of:
750 death benefit applications
150 disability claims
600 educational assistance applications
150 hearing officer appeals
65 BJA Director appeals
Primary Responsibilities
Case Management:
Review and analyze new PSOB death and disability claims
Complete initial review documentation in PSOB 2.0 Portal (same-day requirement)
Conduct case analysis meetings within three working days of file receipt
Process complex benefits claims involving:
Fatal heart attacks
Strokes
Vascular ruptures
Other medical conditions
Data and Analytics:
Capture and maintain PSOB metrics
Generate comprehensive data reports
Track case progression through system
Monitor appeals processes
Maintain detailed case documentation
Security Requirements
Citizenship:
U.S. Citizenship or legal permanent residence required
Must meet DOJ Residency Requirement for three of past five years:
1. U.S. residency
2. Overseas federal/military service
3. Dependent status of federal/military employee overseas
Clearance:
Must pass Minimum Background Investigation (MBI)
Must qualify for and maintain Public Trust Position status
Must comply with all DOJ security protocols
Work Environment
Location:
100% Remote position
Must reside within United States
Must maintain secure home office setup
Required Home Office Equipment:
High-speed internet connection
Professional telephone service
Secure workspace for confidential materials
Government-Furnished Equipment:
DOJ-issued laptop
DOJ-issued smartphone
All equipment must be returned upon separation
Work Schedule
Hours:
Monday through Friday
6:30 AM - 6:30 PM Eastern Time
8-10 hour workday
Flexible scheduling available after 90-day probationary period
