Position Overview
The Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) seeks an Expert-Level Senior Paralegal Specialist V to provide advanced paralegal support for the Public Safety Officers' Benefits (PSOB) Program. This senior position requires extensive specialized experience in benefits/claims processing and provides critical support in administering federal death, disability, and educational assistance benefits to public safety officers and their families.
Required Qualifications
Education (Required):
Paralegal Certificate OR
Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution (legal emphasis preferred)
Experience (Mandatory):
Eight (8) or more years of paralegal experience
At least five (5) years must be specifically in benefits/claims processing
Demonstrated expertise in federal benefits administration
Proven track record of complex claims analysis

Program Scope
Annual Processing Volume:
Death Benefits: 750 applications
Disability Claims: 150 applications
Educational Assistance: 600 applications
Hearing Officer Appeals: 150 applications
BJA Director Appeals: 65 applications
Core Responsibilities
Expert Level Case Management:
Lead complex case reviews of PSOB death and disability claims
Provide expert analysis of challenging cases
Document reviews in PSOB 2.0 Portal (same-day requirement)
Conduct high-level case analysis meetings
Process sophisticated benefits claims involving:
Fatal heart attacks
Strokes
Vascular ruptures
Complex medical conditions
Precedent-setting cases
Leadership and Oversight:
Guide case analysis strategies
Provide technical expertise to team members
Establish best practices for case processing
Monitor quality control standards
Ensure regulatory compliance
Data Management and Reporting:
Oversee PSOB metrics collection
Direct comprehensive reporting initiatives
Manage case tracking systems
Supervise appeals documentation
Maintain program integrity standards
Security Requirements
Citizenship Requirements:
U.S. Citizenship or legal permanent residence mandatory
Must meet DOJ Residency Requirement (three of past five years):
1. U.S. residency
2. Overseas federal/military service
3. Dependent status of federal/military employee overseas
Security Clearance:
Minimum Background Investigation (MBI) required
Public Trust Position qualification mandatory
Continuous compliance with DOJ security protocols
Work Environment
Location:
100% Remote position
Must reside within United States
Must maintain secure home office environment

Work Schedule
Core Hours:
Monday through Friday
6:30 AM - 6:30 PM Eastern Time
8-10 hour workday
Flexible scheduling options after 90-day probation
Federal Holidays (Paid):
All federal holidays observed
Including Inauguration Day when applicable
11 standard federal holidays plus special observances
