Agency Website: www.vsu.edu Job Summary/Basic Functions: Serve as the Senior Payroll Accountant in General Accounting. Monitor, analyze, reconcile, and maintain an accurate accounting of some of the University's accounting records for non-personal service (NPS) expenditures, payroll deduction liability accounts, and payroll stop payment payables. Complete the monthly and year-end reconciliations of the NPS expenditures and payroll stop pay clearing payables. Download, review, analyze, and process the semi-monthly, bi-weekly, and off-cycle payroll and fringe benefit transactions. Prepare the Banner uploads and process the appropriate adjusting journal entries as needed for the University's accounting system (Banner) and the Commonwealth's accounting system (Cardinal). Download, review, analyze, process, and reconcile the semi-monthly payroll liability accounts for the payroll deductions. Prepare Fund Transfer Requests (FTRs), bank wire transfer requests, and adjusting entries as needed. Download, review, analyze, and process the semi-monthly automated VRS and healthcare transactions. Complete and/or assist with the completion of fiscal year-end financial reports. Maintain organized files and logs of all processed documents.
Minimum Qualifications: Considerable knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles as they apply to colleges and universities and other governmental agencies. Working knowledge of fiscal and accounting functions and operations. Working experience performing reconciliations of transactions totaling in the millions, with the ability to perform detailed analysis of transactions, excellent attention to detail, and great problem-solving skills. Demonstrated ability to perform computations with reasonable speed and accuracy. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively (both oral and written) with others in giving and obtaining information, following prescribed operating instructions, and preparing routine reports from fiscal data. Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office and working knowledge of database and other software programs, i.e., Excel (advanced skills), Access, and Word. Ability to work independently and/or as part of a team and solve problems within the scope of duties. Must have excellent interpersonal and organizational skills; experience setting priorities and managing multiple tasks; working knowledge of computer systems, both mainframe and personal computers. Strong analytical/problem-solving, organizational, data entry, and customer service skills. Ability to sort, prepare/batch, file, and maintain financial records, reports, and spreadsheets; process financial transactions; follow policies and procedures; collect and enter financial data; and resolve keying errors. Additional Considerations: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major studies in accounting is preferred. Demonstrated knowledge working with the Banner and Cardinal accounting systems is a plus. At least three (3) years of experience working in a fast-paced higher education business environment.
