Job Description
The Animal Research and Care Division (ACRD) ensures the well-being of animals used in research, teaching, and production at Virginia Tech. As a division of the Office of Research and Innovation, the Senior Research Veterinarian will serve as an ARCD team member in providing guidance and support university-wide in the execution of research and teaching engagement involving animal resources.

Specifically, the Senior Research Veterinarian will be responsible for:
• Providing clinical veterinary medical and surgical care and research support for a variety of laboratory animal species maintained across ARCD managed facilities and other locations in compliance with applicable federal regulations (e.g., AWA and AWRs), PHS Policy, professional standards (e.g. the Guide, the Ag Guide), and institutional and ACRD policies, procedures, and practices
• Providing oversight, guidance, and direction of the humane care and use of animals used in research and teaching activities in non-ACRD managed facilities or program included but not limited to the College of Veterinary Medicine (VMCVM), the College of Agriculture, Agriculture Research and Extension Centers (ARECs), and investigator managed areas across a variety of disciplines
• Assisting the facility supervisor with operating and maintaining the animal facility in compliance with applicable regulations, professional standards, and institutional and ARCD policies, procedures, and practices
• Overseeing, directing and responsibility for a defined component of the veterinary care program

Position requires participation in the veterinary on-call rotation. Position is expected to work on-site in Blacksburg, Virginia and may travel among the Blacksburg and Roanoke locations.

• Ability to acquire a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration and VA Board of Pharmacy registration
• Virginia driver's license or ability to acquire
• Ability to travel to outlying facilities (e.g., Roanoke, Leesburg, ARECs) as needed, with occasional overnight stays necessary
• Ability to obtain, maintain and pass a criminal background check and FBI clearance to work near select agents at ABSL3 facilities
• Evening, weekend and early morning work may be required
• Participates in the veterinary on-call rotation and required to carry the ARCD cell phone when on-call for off hours support on weeknights, weekends, and holidays
Required Qualifications
• Veterinary medical degree (D.V.M. or V.M.D.) from an AVMA accredited or approved veterinary medical college or ECFVG (Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates) certification for graduates of non-AVMA accredited veterinary medical programs
• Current and active license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one of the United States with the expectation to secure veterinary licensure in Virginia within 12 months of hire
• Procurement of DEA registration and VA Board of Pharmacy registration within 6 months of hire
• Eligibility for ACLAM certification (ACLAM board eligible) or other applicable veterinary medicine specialty board certification determined by the Assistant VPRI, Attending Veterinarian
• Completion of ACLAM (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine) approved laboratory animal training program with relevant experience or equivalent progressive experience without a training program
• Working knowledge of federal regulations (e.g., AWA and AWRs) and professional standards (e.g., the Guide, and the Ag Guide) pertaining to animal research and teaching activities
• Demonstrated effective leadership and supervisory experience
• Effective communication skills
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to engage effectively with a diverse group of stakeholders
• Basic computer skills including the ability to utilize common applications (e.g. email, word processing, and spreadsheets)
Preferred Qualifications
• ACLAM (American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine) board certification and active diplomate status
• Active board certification status in another veterinary medical specialty board may be acceptable as determined by the Assistant VPRI, Attending Veterinarian
• M.S. or Ph.D. in a laboratory animal or relevant biomedical research discipline
• National Veterinary Accreditation Program (NVAP) certification
