A Day in the LifeAs a Senior Controls Software Engineer working at Medtronic, you will be a major contributor to the software that controls robotic surgical instruments. You will create software solutions that run on a sophisticated real-time embedded platform, using embedded sensor and actuator hardware to deliver high-bandwidth, precise and robust instrument response. In addition, this role will involve engagement with the electromechanical design of surgical instruments at all stages – with a focus on control software requirements development that is compatible with the test, verification and validation of a safety-critical system.

You will Design and develop feedback control loop algorithms using Simulink and MATLABDevelop controls software for robotic manipulators and surgical instrumentsIntegrate and test new controller designs on hardware and with the rest of the robotic platformContribute to the continuous improvement of verification methodsPartner with the greater software organization, systems engineering, and validation groupsDefine and review software requirementsConduct software and product hardware-in-loop testing and create model and prototypesAct as an independent reviewer of MATLAB/Simulink models to ensure that all software meets quality standardsPrepare and participate in design reviewsDocument or participate in the documentation of the software including architecture and design detail, unit testing, anomaly tracking and reportsMust Haves Bachelor's Degree and at least 4 years of relevant engineering experienceOR an advanced degree and at least 2 years of relevant engineering experience.Nice to Have Proficient in C++ programmingProficient use of modeling & simulation software (MATLAB/Simulink strongly preferred)Familiarity with multi-body kinematics and dynamicsDesign of position, velocity, and torque feedback controllersImplementation and tuning of high-performance feedback control in softwareSignal processing experience (discrete/digital methods and algorithms)Experience with real-time software on microprocessor-based systems and developing software in a Linux environmentIntegrating mechanical and electrical hardware and software, particularly in an embedded contextMedical product development process highly desired-regulatory processes, safety considerations, hands-on experience with medical/surgical devices/instrumentsExperience with diverse, cross functional teams; Geodiversity spanning an international environment is a bonusFluency in English is required (German a plus)Ability to travel up to once per monthPhysical Job Requirements The above statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this position, but they are not an exhaustive list of all the required responsibilities and skills of this position. Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD): 120,000 - 160,000. The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
